Editorial Reviews

The BBC season of three Sherlock Holmes films was the summer hit of 2010 in the UK with over 7.5 million viewers watching the first episode. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role and Martin Freeman as Dr. Watson the stories cleverly bring Conan Doyle's famous characters into the world of modern day London. The music, composed by David Arnold and Michael Price, received BAFTA and Emmy nominations and won an RTS Television Award.

4.0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Emotional In Parts, Repetitive in Others March 13, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
What bothers me about a lot of soundtracks is that they sound more like music to fit scenes than actual music for just listening. As in, they have weird breakdowns and soft spots that don't actually fit the music. Thankfully, this album contains several songs that just work and have excellent ebs and flow of emotion (like "War").

I love the TV series and so I enjoy the music reminding me of the series--but after a while, some of the songs just end up sounding the same. I get they needed to do this for continuity throughout the series, but I think they could have pushed the boundaries a little bit more. All in all, it's a very enjoyable soundtrack.

While you may be familiar with Robert Downey, Jr's Sherlock there is another Sherlock also solving mysteries. This one is not scored by Hans Zimmer, but rather the great David Arnold and Michael Price. Sherlock is the highly acclaimed series on BBC that takes a modern spin on Sherlock Holmes as the iconic detective solves crimes in today's society. Now, I do have to start off by saying that anybody familiar with Hans Zimmer's scores will notice some similarities here. This series started a year after Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes hit theaters, and one cannot deny the influence Hans Zimmer's score had here. However, this is by no means a cheap rip and is very enjoyable.

David Arnold and Michael Price craft a really great theme that finds itself popping up now and then, and the soundscape is perfect. There is the right amount of quirk in the score to give it a smirky twinge. The instrumentation does give it a period feel, which uniquely contrasts with the modern setting of the show. Throughout the album you'll find some great textures and flavors all the while maintaining really energetic arrangements. Overall the score is immensely enjoyable and the only questionable part is why does the soundscape feel "period-ish"? I feel like that it's great to remind the audience of the origins of the character, but if the instrumentation made it feel a bit more modern then I think the score would stand on its own much more. In the end you can't shake the fact that at times it feels like Hans Zimmer's Sherlock Holmes. Otherwise though the music is top notch and another shining light from BBC television.

I really enjoyed this listen. It's a great adventure score with a lot of fantastic qualities. The music moves with precision and there's plenty on this album to keep you going.

Recent and very clever reinterpretations of Arthur Conan Doyle's great detective of Baker Street, Sherlock Holmes, by Guy Richie and PBS/BBC (and a yet to be seen reincarnation on NBC) may leave some purists to wonder what the gods have wrought, but overall have provided inventive entertainment. And this can be said of the musical scores that have proven to be important parts of the productions. Hans Zimmer put together two remarkable scores for the Warner Brothers' films with an unexpected jauntiness that fits Robert Downey, Jr. (and Jude Law as Dr. Watson) like a medical glove. But wait, here comes David Arnold of James Bond fame ably assisted by Michael Price for the PBS series "Sherlock" and, well, the game's afoot! It is good stuff! Two albums have been released by Silva America for the two seasons of "Sherlock" and they are as good as the programs (splendid scripts and outstanding acting especially by Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman) they were written for. Some may quibble that is there is some resemblance between some of the music of Arnold/Price and Zimmer, two solid and yes jaunty themes, which is likely odd coincidence more than anything else but taken as a whole this is a surprisingly good collection of music from a remarkable series. If anything Arnold has found a new niche and has surpassed, in some ways, his work on the 007 films. Initially, one might argue that the music for the first season and recording is better than that for the second but that would show an under appreciation of the very fine music for Irene Adler and the second season's opener "A Scandal in Belgravia," perhaps the best episode thus far. There is a good deal of musical repetition but that is the nature of this kind of production, but it all works on screen and in the two recordings. Read more ›

5.0 out of 5 stars The Game is Definitely On April 16, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
A perfect soundtrack for a perfect show. BBC knew what they were doing when they took this project on, and the show's creators picked the perfect people to give a musical backdrop to our favorite modernized detective and his army doctor colleague. Full of all the eccentric quirks of Sherlock Holmes, down to the tension-building climaxes that make these stories so thrilling, this soundtrack has it all. As an added bonus, this ST inadvertently promotes exercise amongst Sherlockians in need of motivation: just play "Pursuit" on your iPod and go out for a run. See how long it takes you to start imagining that you're running alongside Sherlock and John as they embark on one of their chases. This music will put you right in there with them, and before you know it, you'll be sprinting along trying to head off that mysterious cab before it hits an intersection eight blocks away.
