Book Description

1903 saw The Adventure of The Empty House and the return of Sherlock Holmes to 221b Baker Street where he explains the deception of his death at the Reichenbach Falls to his faithful friend Dr John Watson. 2012 sees The Crime of The Empty House where the former home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Undershaw, lies in disrepair and the threat of being destroyed forever. Commissioned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself, Undershaw was witness to the creation of many of his most famous works, including The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Return of Sherlock Holmes. It is a building deserving preservation for the British nation, and indeed the world, for all time. Sadly, the building is currently under threat from the property developers who wish to divide the house into 3 separate units and build a further 5 alongside. Planning permission for development has already been approved by Waverley Borough Council. The Undershaw Preservation Trust (UPT), with Mark Gatiss [BBC Sherlock] as Patron, is dedicated to the preservation and protection of this important literary building and are campaigning to get this decision overturned, so the house can be restored to its original glory and enjoyed as the single dwelling Sir Arthur Conan Doyle intended it to be. This book is a collection of short Sherlock Holmes stories and poems written by fans from around the world in support of the Save Undershaw campaign - even the cover has been designed by fans. Royalties from the book go towards the UPT to preserve this wonderful house for future generations of Doyleans, Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts and literary fans of all kinds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nooks and crannies December 23, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a book to read, but much more to dip into.
I found myself flipping forwards and back, from short story in the modern idiom to pastiche, to poetry and cartoon. The great and the good gave it their patronage: Steven Fry, Douglas Wilmer (!) are among them, but if this anthology was to work it had to stand on its own, not just as a tribute to Conan-Doyle, The Holmes legacy and saving Undershaw - a worthy, a cultural icon, and a cause that I fiercely admire - but as an anthology of good, interesting, solid stuff. I felt a warm glow of doing duty by the Republic when I downloaded the Kindle version, but I would have been disappointed if the writing wasn't up to par.
Don't worry, everything's fine - buy it and wallow in Sherlockiana (and enjoy the warm Undershaw glow as you explore its literary nooks and crannies.

Stories from fans of ACD's Sherlock Holmes worldwide. Some good, some great, some amazing. I gave it a try as a way to contribute to help restore the home of ACD and what could be considered the birth place of Sherlock Holmes, and got a book for my SH collection that will be enjoyed over and over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sherlock's Home: A Must Have! July 8, 2012
Format:Paperback
Sherlock's Home: The Empty House is a fantastic book written by both fans and Holmes authors from around the world. Inside you will find a series of brilliant short stories and poems that expresses fans admiration for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's characters and world while paying homage to the deep treasure chest of Holmes films, t.v. series, and books. Most importantly this book is also helping to raise funds for The Undershaw Preservation Trust which is working to save the former home of Conan Doyle from being destroyed. They say there is no better time to be a Holmes fan, they are right. This book shows the deep passion that people all around the world have for Doyle's literary genius. With contributions from Mark Gatiss, Stephen Fry, and many other Holmes legends Sherlock's Home: The Empty House is a great book to add to your collection, especially when the proceeds are going to such a noble cause!
