"Approved for Use on Most Major Airlines" VS. "Guaranteed on Board"

Please note, only the Element Duffle for pets up to 8 pounds is Guaranteed On Board®. The Element Carrier for pets up to 16 pounds and Element Duffle for pets up to 20 pounds are approved for use on most major domestic airlines. What’s the difference?

Approved for use on Major Airlines means that a carrier:

  • Provides adequate ventilation
  • Is leak-proof
  • Safely encloses the pet
  • Conforms to underseat dimensions

Most pet carriers and all Sherpa® carriers are airline approved, however ONLY Sherpa® carriers are Guaranteed On Board®.

Guaranteed On Board® is the only program that guarantees a Sherpa® carrier meets an airline's specific rules and regulations and will be allowed on board. All small and medium Sherpa® carriers are included in the GOB program.

  • Go to www.flygob.com
  • Select the participating airline
  • Enter the flight info, carrier info and pet info
  • Print and sign the forms and present when boarding

Should the passenger be denied due to the Sherpa® carrier, Quaker Pet Group will reimburse the pet parent for ticket and pet fee--guaranteed!

Questions to ask before traveling with your pet:

  • Is my pet too old or young to handle the stress of traveling?
  • Is my pet in poor health?
  • Is my pet recovering from surgery or a traumatic event?
  • Is my pet pregnant?
  • Does my pet get motion sickness?

If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, check with your vet if your pet is suited for transport in its current condition.

Prep your pet:

Be sure to purchase the correct size of carrier appropriate for the weight of your pet. Using a carrier that is too large could result in motion sickness. Your pet should have enough room to stand up and turn around inside the carrier.

Prior to traveling make sure to allow ample time for your pet to familiarize itself with its carrier. We recommend purchasing a carrier at least a month in advance to allow your pet sufficient time to become accustomed to it.

Put the carrier in an open area so the pet can investigate and get used to its scent and shape. Put one of your pet's toys, treats or blankets inside the carrier to entice your pet to enter it willingly. Do not force your pet inside the carrier. Take your pet on short trips in the carrier so they get used to being transported in it. If your pet does not like being inside, or tries to escape from the carrier, we recommend further training prior to travel or considering transporting your animal in a hard-sided carrier.

Traveling by Plane

  • Always check your airline's rules and regulations prior to flying. Your pet should be securely in the carrier at all times when aboard the aircraft.
  • Always supervise your pet. NEVER leave your pet unsupervised or unattended in a carrier. Failure to do so can result in damage to the carrier, escape, or injury to your pet.
  • Never give your pet sedatives or tranquilizers unless prescribed by your vet. If prescribed, be sure to get clear and precise instructions as to the dosage, the frequency of the dosage and any risks involved with sedating your pet. Follow the instructions exactly. Do not increase the dosage at your own discretion as pets can easily be over-medicated, especially when flying, as increased altitude can cause cardiovascular and respiratory problems.
  • Do not allow your pet to travel with a choke, pinch or training collar. Cats should travel with a collar that has a quick release or break-away feature.
  • Leads should not be used when your pet is enclosed in the carrier.
  • Be sure your pet's collar is secure and clearly displays proof of current vaccinations, your name, address and contact info.

Travel Tips for You and Your Pet

  1. Book reservations for you and your pet early. Most airlines restrict the number of pets allowed on board each flight.
  2. Complete and print your Guaranteed on Board® forms, or call your airline for its specific requirements.
  3. Research your destination city’s pet rules & regulations, along with those of where you will be staying.
  4. Prep your pet for travel. Be sure it has ample time to adjust to its carrier and practice traveling with your pet in the carrier on short trips prior to the big day.
  5. Make an appointment with your vet. Acquire a health certificate and ensure your pet is up-to-date with its shots no more than 10 days prior to your departure.
  6. Research and create a list of local vets and emergency clinics at your destination.
  7. Be sure you have all of your and your pet’s documentation in order. Do you have your pet’s health certificate? Do you have your Guaranteed On Board® forms to show to the gate agent?
  8. Have your contact info clearly and securely labeled on both your pet’s carrier and on your pet’s tags.
  9. Pack for your pet in advance so you can be sure nothing is forgotten.
  10. Arrive early on your day of departure and allow ample time for you and your pet to check-in and board your flight. Plan ahead and know various locations at the airport(s) where your pet can relive itself prior to (and between) flying.

Traveling by Car

  • Always supervise your pet. NEVER leave your pet unsupervised or unattended in a carrier. Failure to do so can result in damage to the carrier, escape, or injury to your pet.
  • Secure the carrier in the backseat of the car only. Do not secure the carrier to the front seat - your pet will be the safest in the back. The seatbelt can be secured through the luggage band located on the rear side panel of the carrier. The shoulder strap can be secured around the headrest if applicable.
  • Never give your pet sedatives or tranquilizers unless prescribed by your vet. If prescribed, be sure to get clear and precise instructions as to the dosage, the frequency of the dosage and any risks involved with sedating your pet. Follow the instructions exactly. Do not increase the dosage at your own discretion as pets can easily be over-medicated.

I bought this carrier and really like it. However, I think for a pet weighing 20 lbs it would be a very tight fit. My cat weighs 11.5 and fits in fairly well with room to spare. She can't really stand in it and hold her head up, but cats tend to lay down anyway. I would recommend this for pets weighing up to 14-15 lbs at most. Otherwise, I really like it. The fabric is sturdy and the bed part is nice and soft for my pet.

I really like the top opening. Getting my cat in the carrier was easier than getting her in the hard, front opening carrier I had because I just opened the top and she just plopped right in with no fuss.

However, I did read a review where someone's cat chewed through the mesh in about an hour. My cat never tried clawing or chewing the mesh and seemed to enjoy looking out at the view, so I had not issues with it. I would recommend this product for pets up to 15 lbs and am considering buying another for my other cat.

I have a 4 pound maltepoo puppy and he loves this. There is plenty of room for him to grow into this. He likes that he can view out of 3 sides. One side has a very small pocket. Too small to put anything in it. That is the only flaw with this carrier. High quality. Has opening on top and front and back. The liner inside is secure with velcro and can be removed to wash.

Just what I needed. My 6 pound yorkie fits with plenty of room to stand up and turn around if she needs to. It fits perfectly under an airplane seat. I like the newer version much better than the older one. This one you can unzip the bottom lining and wash it if it needs it. The last one we had you couldn't do that.

love it! my cat did not like the metal clangs the hard carrier made. this fits her great, it's more sturdy than i thought it would be for a soft case.

only problem with my order was i was expecting redish trim and i got more of a yellowish brown color. no biggie. wish it had some seatbelt straps, but again, not a huge deal.

Was a little tight under the seats for Southwest Airlines, but as it was a soft frame, I was able to squish it down a little. This was only possible however as my dog did not need the full height. Be careful if you have a particularly tall animal you want to transport.

I purchased this item to bring my dog on vacation with me. I have a 10lb yorkie, who doesn't mind being in the carrier, but every now and then gets restless and scratches at the netting for a few seconds, not a constant scratching or frequent even. The first hour she was in the carrier she scratched at it and the netting started to tear. It is all pulled - there are no major holes in it but I would not trust it to travel with her in it again. So basically, this is a one time use bag if your dog touches the parts with netting at all. The only good thing is I'm glad I purchased this Sherpa carrier rather than a $70 sherpa carrier as they both had netting. You would think a company of this nature would take something like that into consideration, as I've had carriers with netting that my dog traveled in for years and never destroyed. ALSO, if you're going to invest in this bag, I suggest purchasing a new liner for it , as this one practically fell apart with her laying in it. She had fuzzy white stuff all over her fur and in her eyes from being in there, I felt bad for her.

You will curse yourself for buying this carrier. It looks great. It's very impractical. Don't try to squeeze 20 lbs of anything in here unless it's potatoes and they're mashed. Only a kitten to small cat or a toy dog or puppy will fit into this. Go measure your pet. Also be prepared to have another person (make that two) help you get the animal into it. The flaps close when you need them to be open and open when you are trying desperately to keep kitty or pup from exploding out to freedom. If your cat and dog hate going into carriers -- good luck, you will need it. If you do insist on buying one of these, invest in a generous supply of Bitter Apple spray and saturate this thing before putting a puppy into it. Otherwise you will discover as I did that your puppy can buzz through the zippers before you have a chance to use it a second time. Amazon has a great price and free shipping on this but unless you're a sado/masochist and love to punish your pets and yourself -- just say no to this carrier and get something else. If I could have given it a Zero I would.
