3.0 out of 5 stars OK but easily damaged
I recently used two of these bags to transport cats cross country on JetBlue. No one batted an eye at the size of the bag and most didn't even notice we had animals with us. They fit under the seat with only a little squeezing in the height dimension. They were plenty sturdy in most respects but one of the cats scratched through the mesh used for the windows. The cat...

I just recently purchased this bag to transport my cat in an international flight. The bag is perfect if you want to keep a low profile during the trip. Only a few people noticed that I was carrying a cat with me! (kids most of the time). Anyway I think this bag is perfect to carry your pet in air flights but training your pet to become used to it is very important as well.

The bag fits perfectly under a plane seat. I would've liked a set of wheels in the base of the bag to drag it around since my cat is really heavy (about 12 lbs) but other than that I have no complaints from this bag. The materials are very resistant and high quality.

Definitely a must buy if you intend to take your pet with you in the plane. Highly recommend!.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cat Carrier good but removal of pet for security check is necessary, March 11, 2006

I am very pleased with my carriers. I have not encountered the problem with the zippers that is mentioned in another review but will recheck them for sure. Yes, putting the cat in and walking around the house with them is important to getting them used to it instead of jamming the cat in and taking off. Cats do not like surprises. ** Be aware that you must take the cat out of the carrier and carry him/her through security and have the carrier pass through x-ray. This is not easy for someone who is not *very* familiar with handling a terrified cat on a maiden voyage in the airport. Like the fact that it looks like an ordinary carry on bag.

The cat could easily have increased the size of the hole and caused problems so I ended up having to lean over and pet her frequently to keep her agitated digging at the bag to a minimum. Overall the bags worked for us but I was disappointed in how easily the cats were able to damage them. Maybe they work better with dogs or people with a loooooong time to train the cats to get used to the bags. We didn't have zipper problems but our vet suggested using paper clips to clip the zipper pulls together so the cats couldn't work their way out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is approved for under seat in cabin travel, December 13, 2005

This carrier is approved for in cabin under the seat travel. All the airlines I have spoken to have regulations for the size of carrier that can be brought onboard. These regulations are inforced for hard carriers. I was told by Delta & American that as long as the soft sided bag is not larger than a regular carry on piece it is ok. This bag will fit under the seat as well as most of the Sherpa bags available. As airline rules change often, it is always better to ask when making reservations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I was hoping for., October 1, 2005

I was worried about being told at the gate that my carrier would not fit under my seat, or that it was too small for my cat or something would go wrong. I was pleasantly suprised, that even on a crowded flight, and with my being 6' 3" that I was still able to fit my carrier under the seat and have room for my feet. The carrier also was very well made, and when the side flaps are down, with only the mesh on the front open, people never could guess that I had a 12 pound cat in my bag! I was very happy with my purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Airline travel with Sherpa carrier, April 27, 2009

I purchased the Sherpa travel carrier last year for a trip over Christmas with my 15 lb. Shih Tzu. For a few weeks I left it on the living room floor and put a dog biscuit it when playing games with her. I also would carry her around the house in it for a few minutes every day. On the day of the trip she didn't mind being in it as long as I was always with her. The 4 hour flight went off perfect. The carrier fit under the seat of the American Airlines plane easily but I had to push it down a little. Carrying her in it in the airport on my shoulder was tiring but otherwise it was a great trip. I would recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Meets Airline Standards, August 17, 2008
This review is from: Sherpa Pet Delta Air Lines Deluxe Pet Carrier (Misc.)
I had my doubts about this product, because the size dimensions seemed to be too large to meet standard airline carry-on requirements.

I bought two for my two cats to move across the country. I was very paranoid that I'd show up the morning of my 7 am flight only to be told the bags were too big to fit under the seats. So I made a special trip to the airport to check with the United attendants. She saw the bag and immediately said, "Oh yes, those are the good ones." I asked specifically about the size, and she said yes, the size is good.

Turns out, the dimensions airlines give for carry-ons are meant for hard-sided containers only. Soft-sided ones - like this bag - can be squished slightly to fit. My two cats were perfect on both legs of the flight and we all made it to our new home safely.

I had read some of the reviews that said their cats were able to get out of the bag by unworking the zipper, so I bought inexpensive luggage locks (zip ties would also work) to put on the zippers to ensure the cats could not get out.

My only issue with this bag is the mesh panel as other reviewers have also said. My cats did not get through it while on the plane, but one corner has since become ripped. It would be nice if the mesh could be stronger or more kitty proof.

Otherwise, a great bag - met our needs for a stressful cross country trip and yes, they WILL fit under the seat in front of you.

1.0 out of 5 stars This bag is a disaster!!, October 21, 2005
This review is from: Sherpa Pet Delta Air Lines Deluxe Pet Carrier (Misc.)
My fiancé and I bought two of these Sherpa bags for our two cats. They cost us about $125 - much more expensive than the traditional hard carriers - but we gladly paid it, excited at the prospect of a more manageable and comfortable cat carrier than the ones we had used in the past.

However, we were very disappointed with the bags when we put them to use. In fact, choosing them over hard cases turned our flight into a nightmare!

We used the two bags to fly with the cats from the U.S. to Chile-a long trip, but shorter than most international trips by a lot. During the flight, as we were sleeping, the zipper of one of the bags failed, coming apart from below the zipper the way old jackets sometimes do, so you can't re-zip them. Since we were asleep and not noticing, this allowed the cat to escape!!! It was a disaster, with flight attendants upset and us crawling around the cabin searching for the cat when we had been happily napping! Some passengers were allergic and had to be moved from the cabin.

The second bag fared little better. Our other cat managed to scratch holes in the bag's netting, which she could quickly have enlarged and escaped through, had we not stuffed the bag with a blanket to cover the holes. I spent the rest of the flight making sure she didn't scratch new holes.

Now, after one use, both bags need to be replaced, as one bag's zipper no longer zips (the zipper remains open as you pull the zipper along), and the other bag is riddled with holes. We made a $125 purchase for two bags that ruined our trip and can never be used again!

5.0 out of 5 stars It worked for me! (And more importantly, for the cat), February 18, 2008
This review is from: Sherpa Pet Delta Air Lines Deluxe Pet Carrier (Misc.)
I've been struggling with a hard-sided "Kabin Kennel" for years, and this was SO much easier for me and my cat. She seemed a lot more relaxed, and didn't rub her nose raw meowing through hard plastic airholes. Instead of having a metal handle that cut my hand, these two carry straps let me balance her on my hip -- I didn't really need the shoulder strap. I liked the velcro-closed end flaps that let me hide her or peek at her.

Top or endloading made it easier to get her inside (not to mention to leave it in the living room as a bed; I put catnip in it for a few weeks beforehand and fed her treats there to convince her it wasn't all bad). That also made it easier to get her in and out at security.

The fleece liner wandered a bit under her and I put a second liner beneath it as a precaution, but I think she liked the snuggly fleece. I'm so grateful I had this thing; it just happened to be the first time I had a serious delay while travelling with kitty. The zip pocket was great for stowing my travel documents and hers.

My cat tends to snooze on the plane, so I didn't have a problem with her trying to get out. Getting her under the seat was a bit challenging, but I was on a Delta flight, and it *did* fit -- the struts bend enough to make up for the one inch difference.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

A lot of thought seems to have gone into the design of this carrier. My cat had only a short trip in it and it worked very well. She seemed quite comfortable on the sherpa fleece lined pad. It has straps for carrying like a suitcase, as well as a shoulder strap and it was easy to carry. It is delivered in a small carton and it's a bit stiff to stretch out and open when brand new but I suppose that's good because it means that it's studily constructed. Intelligently written and useful instructions come with it, telling you how to travel with your pet and which airlines accept its use in the passenger compartment. There is also a pocket for your pet's travel documents. I suppose that on a long trip, a cat might be able to claw through the mesh window - just keep an eye on it. The carrier is large enough for cats and small dogs. I bought this from PetCo through Amazon and was delighted with the good communication and extremely fast shipping.
