Some fine singing,
This review is from: Sherrill Milnes In Recital, Vol. 1 (Audio CD)
For me these CDs are a real treat. Sherrill Milnes was, of course, a huge star of opera, and it is for this that he is renowned, but his work in recital on this collection is quite pleasing. He has a baritone voice that lead the way for a generation. It's a big ringing masculine voice with a truly spectacular upper register, and while there are some places here where he out sings the material, in the main he uses the power with discretion and demonstrates a wonderful artistry. His voice is not so warm as Prey's or Terfel's, but on the other hand it is stunningly nimble and shiny and he sings quite passionately. The top, big or small, is truly, truly amazing. His sense of humor is also quite apparent in several wonderful little asides that defy the stuffiness we associate with the classical crowd. There are a couple arias thrown in for good measure and he delivers them smashingly, of course. The recordings are live and the quality is good, not great, with a few exceptions. I would recommend these CDs to anyone who enjoys lieder and art song. This is a different side of Milnes and well worth the price of admission. I had the pleasure of seeing him in recital twenty five years ago, and these CDs confirm that he was just as good as I remember him.
