Editorial Reviews

Review

“The world’s most neglected great wine, sherry is ancient, delicious, and still far too obscure. So it’s fortunate to have its story told by Talia Baiocchi, a great young wine-writing talent with her finger on the pulse. Her clear, witty style is perfect for untangling sherry’s intricacies—and for demonstrating why a whole new generation of wine lovers (and bartenders!) are so taken with it. The tastefully opinionated producer profiles make this an essential guide for anyone seeking to navigate the ever expanding sherry lists of so many new shops and restaurants.”
Jordan Mackay, James Beard Award–winning coauthor of Secrets of the Sommeliers

"Witty, fun, relatable . . . These three words are not typically associated with sherry, but perfectly describe Talia Baiocchi and her passion for the wines of the Sherry Triangle. The cocktails and recipes are a welcome (and critical) addition to this stylish, well-written book.”
David Lynch, owner/wine director of St. Vincent Tavern and Wine Merchant and author of Vino Italiano

"A good wine writer mixes some magic and romance into the science of what they love, and Baiocchi’s Sherry is no exception.”
Adam Morganstern, Forbes

"[Sherry] offers an enthralling peak inside the rich history of Sherry. From famed cellars in Jerez, Spain to Sherry production and evolution in the U.S. Baiocchi's exploration of the classic and modern sides of Sherry is rounded out with a trove of classic and inspired cocktail recipes [...]"

This book has me conflicted and suffice to say, at no point did I really feel like it makes Sherry more accessible to the public nor is a re-defining moment for the drink like the Liem & Barquin book Sherry, Manzanilla and Montilla was.

It essentially strives to be a primer on Sherry, offer up some bodega profiles, Sherry cocktail recipes, and then a bit of food pairing. This has been painted as a handbook to Sherry but what it feels like was that Ms. Baiocchi went to the publisher (who also publish her main gig "Punch") with a rather solid idea to do a book about Sherry cocktails. That would have been sound, but apparently 10 Speed Press didn't think it adequate and kept asking her to create additional sections.

I mention this as the book is heavily disjointed as if several different authors wrote it, like how the screenplay for Armageddon feels. The "What is Sherry" part is extremely wordy and doesn't appear edited in the least as if the publisher figured that as she works as an editor, someone doesn't need to go over her text. At times the narrative comes out very thin despite its verbosity.

The bodega profiles have an air of being pulled from the producer's websites or marketing material. They are very superficial and show no command of the region save for a few recommendations of Sherries that I overall agree with being of note.

The cocktail recipes are the best part as I've tried several of them and they're good. The food part I can take or leave as honestly, Sherry pairs with nearly everything and this versatility isn't explored.

In my studies to become a Sommelier I've mostly worked with French and Italian wine. Sherry was always a mystery to me! This book doesn't leave a word out. Anything you could ever want to know about this famous, delicious and diverse wine is in this book.

This book gives an approachable history of the wines of Jerez, explains the different styles produced, and provides a simple guide for the best selections from each bodega -- recommendations I've already put to good use. It would be a wonderful thing if the rest of the wine world would pull its collective head out and write more books like this, without pretension and with an eye toward usefulness, as Baiocchi has here.

There is a recent, groundbreaking, benchmark book on sherry that was published about two years before Ms. Baiocchi's book hit the market, and "Sherry: A Modern Guide" has the misfortune of being released on the heels of that far superior book: Peter Liem's Sherry, Manzanilla and Montilla published in 2012. I have an extensive library of new, not so new and seriously vintage books on wine (and spirits), and not many new wine books turn my head. Liem's book grabbed me by the throat and dragged me along on a serious journey into the world of sherry, a wine I had neglected during nearly 40 years of wine tasting, travel and collecting. If you are truly interested in the subject, you want Peter Liem's book. You want it now.

As for "Sherry: A Modern Guide," it is a perfectly serviceable and good-looking introduction to the topic, dotted with wonderful photographs from Ed Anderson, whose work in Rajat Parr's recent "Secrets of the Sommeliers" was so impressive. (Liem's book has no photos, but you will not miss them). There is certainly nothing seriously wrong with "A Modern Guide." The production values are there. It provides informative, concise profiles of a number of the best sherry producers now in operation, and a nice piece on Equipo Navazos, whose "negociant bottlings" of rare and unusual sherries have been at the forefront of recent interest in the wines of the region. There is a very brief history and description of the terroir, viticulture, winemaking methods and styles of sherry. There are a few relatively simple recipes for Spanish-influenced food to go with sherry.

This book is a complete a deep guide about sherries (jerez) I didn't know many facts about Sherry but I heard is used to pair with many especially dry sherries, I didn't know Sherry is the driest wine in the world. After reading this book I bought many sherries and I enjoyed drinking and combining with food, they are awesome for strong cheeses. What a discover. Talia loves Sherries and Spain, I never been there but I will go to Jerez de la Frontera to live the experience.

I bought this gift for my dad for Christmas, but once my husband saw it, he couldn't put it down! He read through it before we gifted it (we fessed up to my dad). The two of them have become Sherry obsessed. Great buy for the beverage lover. It si also super attractive and looks great on the coffee table!

I love this book. Talia Baiocchi's overview of the world of Sherry is elegant, funny and chock-full of persuasive and educational tidbits. Surely this book will fan the flame in a very big way to the growing sherry habits of bartenders and sommeliers everywhere.
