4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best teen movies out there, December 31, 2004
This review is from: She's All That (DVD)
Zack Siler (Freddie Prinze Jr) is doing fine - he's just started his last 8 weeks of high school, he's class president, he's dating the most desirable girl in high school, and they are a shoo-in for prom king and queen. Everything's good until his girlfriend arrives at school. Taylor Vaughn (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe) got a tattoo on spring break, and she is now dating Brock Hudson (Matthew Lillard), whose only claim to fame is that he's an idiot on MTV's Real World reality TV. Zack is hurt, especially when his friend Dean (Paul Walker) razzes him about it. Zack responds by claiming he can make any girl in school into the prom queen. That's the kind of statement that leads to a bet. Dean says he'll choose a girl for Zack's challenge, and he chooses Laney Boggs (Rachael Leigh Cook).
Laney is about as big an outsider as Taylor's ego. She's an artist - she has been advised that many artists are more appreciated after they are dead, so she should kill herself (we all need "friends" like that, right?). She looks after her father and her brother. She's clumsy. She wears unattractive glasses. She wears no makeup. She wears overalls. She even wears a daggy hat while she works in a fast-food joint. They've pulled out all the stops to try to make the beautiful Rachael Leigh Cook look plain (they failed, but they tried hard!).
This is the predictable My Fair Lady type of story, or so it seems at first, especially when Zack's sister Mackenzie (Anna Paquin) gets involved to do a make-over on Laney. But there are some nice little twists, and they add up to a film that's different enough to be a pleasant time. Two of the interviewees mention that this film was deliberately modelled on early John Hughes films; I'm not sure I'd agree with that, but it does capture the idea of the romantic comedy / teen comedy genre to which this film belongs.
There are some interesting lesser characters in this film. We get to see Gabrielle Union and Clea DuVall as minor characters, and Sarah Michelle Gellar in a non-speaking role (she's included in a list headed "They're all that" in the end-credits). Tim Matheson, in a single real scene as Zack's father, was haggard-looking, but convincing.
All up, this is a pleasant film, and I recommend giving it a try.

For DVD enthusiasts, this is not cool!

As for the movie, I enjoyed the movie. I enjoyed the dance scene during the prom. Freddie Prinze Jr. and Rachael Leigh Cook did a great job. Also, you can see a special small cameo of Buffy the Vampire Slayer star, Sarah Michelle Gellar in the cafeteria scene. This movie is a fun movie to watch, but as a DVD...there should have been more included.

The movie was fun to watch...but the DVD was just blah! No extras...no good rating! Hope Miramax remembers that if they want their DVD's to be bought that rented, they need to add more to their DVD releases.

5.0 out of 5 stars two guys make a bet after one gets dumped by popular gf, October 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: She's All That [VHS] (VHS Tape)
If you're a teen like me and like these new teen movies that are coming out, then I absolutely recommend that you see this movie. The two leads in this movie played by Freddie Prinze Jr.(Zach) and Rachel Leigh Cook (Laney) are a great duo. They perform well together and are a great team. Also, Zach's bestfriend played by Paul Walker helps to make this movie what it really is.

When school starts Zach (Prinze) who is the popular, jock gets dumped by his popular girlfriend Taylor (Jodi Lyn O' Keefe) after spring break. So he's left dateless for the very important prom. With a little provoking from his not so sensitive bestfriend (Walker) he bets that he can make any girl into a prom queen only eight weeks before the big event. The victim of their bet: Laney (Cook), a nerdy art student too busy with art to help her dad and brother, and also to make a social life. However, a couple of looks from Zach and a couple of dates, Laney's heart begins to melt, and her appearance at school soars. Then before you know it Zach's falling for her and she's falling for him. Only problem, Zach's bestfriend tries to ruin it for Zach by asking Laney to the prom. Then Laney finds out about their bet and wants nothing to do with Zach. But sooner or later with a little swooning from Zach her heart belongs to him again and Taylor is left out in the cold. So as you can see this is a great movie that is wonderful, and really keeps your attention while the movie is playing. It's kind of like a newer version of Cinderella only instead of a fairy godmother she's got a hunky guy, and ALL THAT. Well, this movie is guaranteed to charm the socks off of you. So if you are looking for a romantic comedy this movie is for you.

I love this movie! It is great because it is all fun. Most movies have annoying parts that you just don't want to watch after you have seen it a few times, not this movie, every second is great! Not only that but it has to make you happy, sure it is a little cheesy, but it ends great. Not to mention the fact that most of us were NOT the prom queen type, so this movie is especially great!

5.0 out of 5 stars "You didn't think you became popular for real, did you?", June 15, 1999

This review is from: She's All That [VHS] (VHS Tape)
"You did? That's so sweet." I'm a 26 year old guy and I saw "She's All That" seven times in the theater. Anyone with a heart will love with this movie. It does not have the best actors, script, or plot, and it's not even close to being original, but then again, what high school movie is? This is the first film since the John Hughes era which I have completely fallen in love with. I don't like this movie because the stars are good looking, or because of the soundtrack (though Sixpence None the Richer's "Kiss Me" helps), but this spin on "Pretty In Pink" meets "Pygmalion" meets "Can't Buy Me Love" has won me over. The beach house flashback, the bet, the expressive theater, the beach , and the party are all great, and the the dance scene is classic ("Right about now..."). Like "Can't Hardly Wait," this is an 80's movie for the 90's, and is a must for the video collection of any lover of the high school genre of film.

5.0 out of 5 stars All teen movies should be this great, December 27, 2005

I love this movie. While the teen movie stereotypes are always apparent in every film, "She's All That" doesn't go overboard and, surprisingly, presents a relatively realistic view of the high school social strata.

After Zach, the class president and soccer star, is very publically dumped by his "magically delicious" (and equally popular) girlfriend, Taylor, he's hard put to maintain his legacy.

Uber-jock, though a little slow, Zach's friend, Dean, bets him that he can't replace Taylor and make any girl prom queen.

Enter Laney Boggs, an art student who cares little about the social scene. Dean picks Laney as Zach's prom queen "project" and Zach has a hard time convincing Laney to even go out with him.

Meanwhile, Taylor, the ex, is dating a Real World reject who she met over spring break, but she's still catty over her "discards" and is horrible to Laney, embarassing her at a party.

The more time Zach spends with Laney, the more he starts to like her and Laney begins to open up and finds a real outlet in her art.

Dean, sensing he might be about to lose the bet, asks Laney to prom before Zach gets around to it and, a recently single Taylor, attaches herself to Zach's arm, assuming he'll take her back.

Ultimately, feelings are hurt, battle lines are drawn...and a really cool dance scence takes place at the prom.

I love the fresh comedy in the movie that is amusing for teens without being impractical or raunchy. The characters are well-developed and actually evolve in a realistic fashion (even if you are left wondering how nice-guy Zach ever dated self-absorbed Taylor Vaughn).

All-in-all, there's really nothing comparable to the teen movies like "Sixteen Candles" or "Pretty In Pink" because those are genres unto themselves, but "She's All That" is definitely a nice representation of a good, modern teen movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars "She's All That"...now here's what high school is all about!, November 12, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: She's All That [VHS] (VHS Tape)
"She's All That" is probably the best movie for teens. But you don't even have to be a teenager to enjoy this movie. The setting of "She's All That", takes place in a town in California at a modern-day high school (the same high school used in the TV show, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"...a.k.a. Sunnydale High - well at least the older episodes took place there). It's senior year and the students just came back from spring break. Zack Siler (Freddie Prinze Jr.) is the most popular, coolest, guy in the entire senior class...maybe even the entire school. He's athletic, smart, cool, and rich. Zack comes back to school to find out that his hot-shot girlfriend, Taylor Vaughan (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe), dumped him for a TV star, Brock Hudson from "The Real World" (Matthew Lillard) while she was on vacation in Florida with some of her friends. Still stunned and shocked by Taylor dumping him, Zack's best friend, Dean Sampson (Paul Walker), makes a bet with Zack...Zack is supposed to find any average girl to take the place of Taylor, and turn her into the Senior Prom Queen by the time of their Senior Prom. Dean gets to choose the girl...and he chooses Laney Boggs (Rachel Leigh Cook), the artistic, and biggest geek in school! Zack tries to get Laney to go out with her and they end up falling in love...even though Taylor tries to win back Zack! An excellent cast for a great, fun movie with superb performances by Freddie Prinze Jr., Paul Walker, Rachel Leigh Cook, Jodi Lyn O'Keefe, Matthew Lillard, Anna Paquin, Elden Ratliff, Usher Raymond, Kimberly "Lil' Kim" Jones, Gabrielle Union, Dule Hill, Kevin Pollak, and Kieran Culkin and a special appearence from Sarah Michelle Gellar ["Buffy the Vampire Slayer"] herself. I loved the dance sequence at the Senior Prom. The choreography for the routine was amazing...and the music was awesome, hip, and cool. This a very memorable movie and this really is what high school is all about. Prinze Jr., as Zack, portrays a perfect example of what jocks and popular guys are like in high school. And Cook, as Laney, protrays a perfect example of what all the rest of us high school students are like! One of the actors protrays an outstanding performance that really stands out. He is Kieran Culkin (actor Macualy Culkin's younger brother), who plays Simon Boggs, Laney's younger brother. One thing I think is really funny about this movie (not funny as in "ha, ha" funny but funny as in "strange" funny) is that both Kieran Culkin and Elden Ratliff (Jesse Jackson -- Laney's best friend) both star in the movie, "The Mighty" with Sharon Stone and Gillian Anderson. (That is another good movie I recommend, by the way.) And if you wanna get another view point of high school, then rent or buy "10 Things About You" -- starring yet, another fantastic group of young popular actors including Julia Stiles and Joseph Gorden-Levitt [Tommy, from the TV show, "3rd Rock from the Sun"]. "She's All That" is a great movie you can see again and again without getting tired of it! Go and buy it now!

1.0 out of 5 stars Totally Unimaginative, May 26, 2000
This review is from: She's All That (DVD)
I don't understand all the hype about this film-its far from being anything special. The plot-if you could call it that-is very ordinary and echoes about a zillion sterotypes about teenagers. I don't mind the fact that the film is superficial: a film can get away with dealing with superficial characters or situations so long as it has some originality, like Clueless. It's just that the screenplay is second rate and the sort that you can imagine just about any wannabe writer putting forward. It lacks *imagination.* Oh and the acting's not too good either, and the jokes are quite feeble. The only things worth checking out about this movie is the final dance scene and the soundtrack. If you wanna see 'teen movies' with a bit of originality and imagination I rate Cruel Intentions, American Pie and Clueless.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's the Details that Count, November 24, 1999
This review is from: She's All That (DVD)
I could write about the fine job Rachael Leigh Cook does in this film, and she does. But I'd rather talk about the camerawork. The opening sequence of this film is the best steady cam work I've seen. The camera flows through the corridors of the high school as all the major characters strut into frame to the beat of the soundtrack. It's a real tour de force and I just felt somebody ought to point it out.

The choreography in the dance sequence at the Prom is commendable too. Good going.

The DVD is quite nice, if minimalistic. I enjoyed the music video. Well worth a buy for fans of the genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Predictable, but lovable!, June 17, 2005
By
This review is from: She's All That (DVD)
Okay, so like every other teen-romance movie on the market it's predictable, but lovable indeed! First off, the director couldn't have cast the roles better. Freddie Prinze, Jr. is perfect for the role of Zack and a perfect portrayal of today's ideal of a popular jock. And, Rachel Leigh Cook does a more than wonderful job going from geek to chic. Her wit and charm really shine in her role of Laney. Now, on to the story. Like I said before, it's predictable. First off, we see Zack (school stud and senior class president) get brutally dumped by his girlfriend, Taylor. Everyone knows, or has known a Taylor. Like Zack says, strip away all that attitude and makeup and all you have is a C- average in a wonder bra. And, according to Zack with the right look and guy by her side anyone girl can reign the title of prom queen. However, Zack's not so helpful best friend, Dean, disagrees. So, the bet was made and the race was on. So, who was going to be Zack's "extreme makeover?" None other than art student and not so graceful, Laney Boggs. After trials and tribulations Laney finally gets nominated and runs against Taylor for the queen's crown. Everything's perfect. Zack has turned Laney into the perfect girlfrind, and the lovable girl to win the votes. But, will this happily-ever-after be crumbled to shreads when Dean spills the beans on the bet just to throw Zack a curve ball? Does Laney defeat Taylor? You have to watch. It may be predictable, but it's a movie like none other! You should sit through it- atleast once!
