Editorial Reviews

Filmmaker Gwen Haworth turns her camera on her family for this down-to-earth grassroots documentary that follows her transition from male to female over the course of several years. This thoughtful film is less a detailing of surgeries and more a meditation on family ties - a mapping of the transitions that take place within blood relationships, friendships and love over a time of great personal transformation. Through one-on-one interviews and animation, Haworth gives plenty of space for her mother, father, sisters, wife and best friend to tell their stories and share their reactions to the ongoing process of her transition. Their words are at times painful to hear, but the sheer honesty of Haworth's family in recounting their fear, anger, understanding and support provides an exceptional snapshot of one family's journey in coping with change and learning to love Gwen as she is - much as she learns to do the same.

People looking to learn more about trangender issues will find that here, but more importantly, they will find a gorgeously made film about love, family, and identity.

I thought this movie was very well written and it really gives you an insight into what her family and friends were thinking and going through.

I was actually looking for flicks on FTM not MTF persons but thought this one looked interesting - and it was. She is very honest and the interviews and comments from her friends and family are very fantastic - it portrays not just her story but how her choices and her 'new' lifestyle effected her loved ones. It made me think of asking my family questions on their feelings about my transition. This doco got me to think and yet it also told a good story. Not at all disappointed I own this movie - definitely interesting to see the story from the other side of the coin.

A very well made Documentary, as a film graduate I appreciate your transitions (sic), and the many other elements that help to keep the viewer engaged and make the exposition move freely. As a person still holding onto the secret you had, I too can understand your situation and the huge impact that was made by this news to your parents of another generation. As with many stories I have read or seen the trans person thinks they know the answer to how their families will react. Usually negative news for the trans person, but not always, it was fortunate you and your wife did not have children that would have complicated things even more. But, I digress, great job on the film, how are you going to follow this up six years later? Is there still a story there? Kudos!

Everyone should see this film. It's thought provoking and possibly mind changing for some. Very educational, funny, poignant & entertaining. Not your typical film on this subject. This would be a great guidance tool for therapists, family counselors, medical professionals & families. This film maker is quite talented. This film is a lesson for many on how to keep a loving family together
after the shock of one family member "coming out". WOW! BTW....someone mentioned it should be more in depth...there is a second version that is available to professional educators etc. But it could not be released to the general public in platforms like Amazon.
That version is much more in depth.

I liked the pictures and video's from Gwen's past. She filled in the gaps with excellent animated cartoon shots to explain what was happening. However, I was sometimes confused by the identity of the characters, particularly Gwen's best male friend.

Not a great documentary but it is okay. It could have been a lot more in depth. I may send it to a friend.
