3.0 out of 5 stars A cute book, but not a great pregnancy resource.
Although this book is very well written and will definitely elicit laughs from the reader, I was disappointed in the formatting and lack of real medical information. For example, my husband wanted to find out exactly what an amnio was, and tried to find out in this book - there is no index or guide, and he had to thumb through the book until he found it among random...

This review is from: She's Having a Baby - and I'm Having a Breakdown (Paperback)
This book was a gift and unfortunately it arrived too late. Its not that my wife had already given birth, it is because my wife single handily tried to increase the revenue projections of Amazon by purchasing every known book about pregnancy that was written in English. I even think she brought a few books written in Spanish thinking she could translate them, but that is another story. So armed with a city library size collection of books she dug into them like a dieter at Dairy Queen, and I being the caring new age man I am, patently listened to each fact, story and antidote (regardless of the number of times they were told). Thus when I was given this book during the fourth month I thought I had a pretty good understanding of what was going on. My assumption proved correct.

This is a well written and funny book that all men should get before the pregnancy starts, because each day into the pregnancy usually brings on something new that this book would have warned and prepared you for. If I had read the book before my wife engaged in the home study Ph.D. program on pregnancy, then I would have been able to better engage in conversations with her on the topics at hand instead of just stilling there in a permanent state of confusion. Buy the book then for no other reason that you can not seam so dumb when your wife starts to talk to you about what is happen on week 15 and 2 days.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny and right on target, July 16, 1999

This review is from: She's Having a Baby - and I'm Having a Breakdown (Paperback)
She's Having a Baby is an excellent book for both fathers and mothers-to-be. It is funny and accurately captures the many thoughts and emotions that couples tend to experience during their pregnancy. I laughed out loud many times as I read the book. I knew exactly what Mr. Barron was talking about more times than I would like to admit. From a father's viewpoint, my two favorite pregancy books are this one and a book called We're Pregnant! - written by an expectant mother and father and also very candid, funny and true-to-life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great bathroom book for first time dads!, June 12, 2002

This review is from: She's Having a Baby - and I'm Having a Breakdown (Paperback)
I bought this book for my husband when we found out we were having our first baby. I first bought myself 3 books on pregnancy and he was annoyed that I was always reading them and he had nothing to read, I told him he could read my books too but he didn't like them. I then discovered this little gem. It is written in numbered sections, most being a page or less. It is a perfect book to leave in the bathroom if that is your husband's favourite reading spot, like mine! It is NOT a medical book, he will have to look at your books for any details but does tell him how to deal with all your symptoms including hormone craziness, worrying about miscarriage, getting fat... Even tells him how not to react if he happens to ingest a bit of breast milk later in the pregnancy! Very funny and well written. It validates alot of the feelings men go through too, worries about money, their wive's health etc... I would highly recommend it.

When my wife became pregnant I read every book, magazine, and article on pregnancy that came into the house. I even read "The Girlfriend's Guide" and "What to Expect" from cover to cover (ok, so I'm a bit obsessive). Somewhere along the way I decided to find some books on the lighter side of impending fatherhood. I purchased three or four humor books, this was the best of the bunch. I must have read it eight or nine times before my son was born. When my wife's sister became pregnant I sent my dogeared copy to my brother-in-law as a gift. I have since purchased several more copies for friends whos wives are pregnant. It's become part of my traditional gift, the guy gets this book during the pregnancy, after the baby is born the couple gets a case of diapers. Both gifts are always appreciated.

I've seen some reviews that call the book sexist and neanderthal but I just don't see it. Heck, my wife read it and loved it and she's as liberal as they come.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun to read, great for Dad-to-be, November 16, 2000
This review is from: She's Having a Baby - and I'm Having a Breakdown (Paperback)
I was searching for a pregnancy book that my husband would enjoy reading when I discovered She's Having a Baby. Since we were expecting our third child, being pregnant was nothing new for us. James Barron provides an accurate and often homorous look at pregnancy through the eyes of a father to be. As I read the book, I found myself laughing at the thought of my own husband musing about my ever-changing body, mood swings, enormous appetite, and fascination with the size and shape of my belly. Gene laughed harder than I did at many of the comments and smirked a time or two when I asked if he really had thought the same thoughts Mr. Barron described. This book won't give you much medical information but it will provide an insightful look at pregnancy from the viewpoint of a dad-to-be. A Child is Born is also an excellent resource as it contains detailed pictures of the unborn baby. We're Pregnant! is another good resource as it contains a down-to-earth look at pregnancy from the viewpoint of both an expectant mother and expectant father.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: She's Having a Baby - and I'm Having a Breakdown (Paperback)
I bought this book for my husband to help him thru the trials and tribulations of my pregnancy, of which I am having many. It has been extremely useful, and I believe it has given my husband real insight into what I have been going thru and how I feel. I feel like he sympathizes more and is more supportive since he has read it. Whenever I try to enlighten him about something, he says "I know that, I read it in my book!"

Although this book is very well written and will definitely elicit laughs from the reader, I was disappointed in the formatting and lack of real medical information. For example, my husband wanted to find out exactly what an amnio was, and tried to find out in this book - there is no index or guide, and he had to thumb through the book until he found it among random second trimester advice. The book is rather small, and is divided into 3 sections, one for each trimester. Maybe I'm just looking at it from a female standpoint, but both my husband and I were frustrated that there is really not any true medical content. This is a great, quick read (very funny and some sweet suggestions for every hubby) as long as you are just looking for a break from medical jargon and a humorous approach to each trimester.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy this for him now!!, April 1, 2002

This review is from: She's Having a Baby - and I'm Having a Breakdown (Paperback)
I am 7 1/2months pregnant with my first child and just bought this book for my husband for his birthday last week. WHAT WAS I WAITING FOR??? In less than a week this book has changed my husband from a terrified, distant, unaffectionate husband into someone who wants to take my picture so I can see how beautiful I am when I'm pregnant! And he's bringing home presents to show me how much I'm appreciated. I have read a few chapters with him and have laughed out loud. This book has totally lightened the mood in our house and made me feel like my husband finally has some idea of what WE are going through.

5.0 out of 5 stars He Loves This Book!, April 23, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: She's Having a Baby - and I'm Having a Breakdown (Paperback)
This is the one of the few books that I have found that were written for men. My husband and I have been reading it together. My husband absolutely loves it! James Barron is very enlightening while providing a great deal of humor. He talks about the emotions of the husband that most of the books don't even mention. This is a MUST-READ for all men who want to be active in the pregnancy or who just want to know that he isn't crazy! It is also a great-read for the wives!

This review is from: She's Having a Baby - and I'm Having a Breakdown (Paperback)
My husband was glued to this book for days after I bought it for him! Although he is fascinated with my "technical" pregnancy books, "She's Having a Baby" was the first to tell HIM what to expect from his ever-changing wife. It is so much fun that I've been reading it too!
