3.0 out of 5 stars Whut up, dawg?
I rented this one, because I just recently saw another Armada Bynes flick, "What a Girl Wants," and loved that one. This one was just a'iight. Nothing special, but interesting enough. I would recommend renting before purchasing.

Definitely my favorite part was the way Amanda took on the man role. I loved her 'guy' phraseology.

Soccer-playing Viola (Bynes) is really upset when the girls' soccer team is cut. The boys' team does not want any girls on it, so Viola decides to impersonate her brother Sebastian (Kirk), who conveniently is starting a new school where he is unknown. He is also skipping out of the first weeks of school in order to pursue a musical career in Europe. Being Sebastian, she can play soccer, and maybe even get some revenge on her own school's team.

Everything is going well for Viola until she falls in love with her roommate (Tatum). Of course, he is interested in Olivia (Ramsey), and Olivia has got her eye on Viola. The only thing that could make things more complicated for Viola is if her brother were to come home early. And he does.

"She's the Man" is loosly based on William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night", and works pretty well. The majority of this film's success is due to Amanda Bynes as Viola. While never really looking like a guy, she has the enthusiasm and screen presence to make this an enjoyable film. Although aimed primarily at the teen audience, others will find enjoyment in it too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute and funny chickflick!, August 27, 2006
This review is from: She's the Man (Widescreen Edition) (DVD)
For a teenage chickflick, I really loved this movie! Amanda Bynes is a great actress. She's down to earth, funny and has a great personality. The characters that she portrays in movies are very similar to the characters she plays in TV Shows. Nonetheless, she's amazing at the roles that she plays.

I've grown up watching Amanda on Nickeloden, then WB, and now movies. I like that she's down to earth and not at all stuck up or prissy!

Overall, this is a great comedy especially for a teenage date.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shakespeare! Seriously., March 26, 2007
This review is from: She's the Man (Widescreen Edition) (DVD)
For some reason, Shakespeare translates very well to modern high school. I think it's the social cliques and emotions running high. I think this is one of the funnier adaptations, along the lines of "10 Things I Hate About You," but with the story line for "Twelfth Night" instead of "Taming of the Shrew."

The actors didn't hold back on the comedy, the adaptation is well written, and the story is a classic. I actually think the disguises make more sense than in the original play; where in the original, people actually got the twins mixed up, in this adaptation, no one who knew either of them really well got a good look at Viola when she was being Sebastian.

There were lots of nice references back to the original, as well: Duke's speech at the end, the spider "Malvolio," Cesario's pizza place.

If you like Shakespeare or teenage romantic comedies OR sports movies, I would recommend this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastically hilarious!, April 11, 2006
From the minute I saw the trailer for this film I wanted to see it, so as soon as it came out in cinemas I was buying my ticket. It was probably one of the best film choices I ever made. With witty lines and fabulous acting it managed something a lot of films can't do anymore; it was funny without resorting to being crude or distasteful. It was entertaining from beginning to end with yet another incredible performance from Amanda Bynes whose physical comedy and subtle humour made the movie shine. It also managed to stay true to the majority of the storyline for Shakespeare's Twelfth Night which it was based on. It even had actual names from the play such as Viola (who in the film dresses up as her twin brother Sebastian) Malvolio (who is the spider in the film) and quotes ("some are born great, some acheive greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them" from the play.) I recommend it to anyone looking to thoroughly enjoy themselves!

5.0 out of 5 stars She really is the man!, April 12, 2007
This review is from: She's the Man (Widescreen Edition) (DVD)
She's the Man starring the very funny Amanda Bynes is enjoyable from start to finish. Hunky Channing Tatum also stars as Duke, the boy Viola has a major crush on. Viola's high school soccer team is canceled from the program and decides to impersonate her twin brother, Sebastian at his boarding school so she can play soccer there while her bro is in London for two weeks. Bynes's physical comedy is invetible, her acting is refreshing and she has always reminded me of a young Lucille Ball. Bynes is never afraid to be sexy, goofy, and awkward all at the same time. This film is based on a loose adaptation of Shakespeare's Twelth Night. She's the Man had me laughing practically the whole way through. I highly recommend this teen romantic comedy. Enjoy!

Take one ounce of Shakespeare, four hot bodied young actors, a few cases of mistaken identity, and soccer, and you have just a field full of fun.

While very loosely based on Twelfth Night (and you really have to look hard for the hidden dialogue from the play) the story of a girl (Bynes) who must pose as her brother (Kirk) to play soccer and prove to the world that girls are equal to boys (if not better). While everyone at the school must temporarily suspend reality to believe that Bynes even resembles, acts or sounds like her foot taller brother is something that makes the movie cheesy and fun (but at the same time addictive).

Overall, the acting is good, the story is fun and it moves quickly. If you are looking for high drama or bust your gut comedy, this is not it. If you are looking for a fun movie that makes you smile in a guilty pleasure sort of way... get this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars More than just Shakespeare..., April 1, 2006
As many of you probably know, this movie was based on Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. That was the top reason why I went to see this movie, anyway...but it also has so much more humor than I exspected. The basic story line is a twin girl dresses up like her brother. Much confusion and hilarity ensues as a result, of course. Yet the story is also widened with the beginning relationship and soccer dream of Viola. Then you have Duke Orsino (yes, Duke is his name, not his title) as the best soccer player that can't talk to girls. And you guessed it, they room together. The whole girl dressing up as a boy theme in modern society is the catalyst for some realllllly funny complications such as community showers and kissing booths. I highly recommend this movie both for the humor (I was laughing during 3/5 of the time) and the Twelfth Night references such as the Illyria school and Cesario Pizza and the quote about greatness (Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them). They even have a tyrantula named Malvolio. Funny and educational...sort of. Anyway, it's great stuff. Go see it. Now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun To Watch, March 1, 2007
This review is from: She's the Man (Widescreen Edition) (DVD)
Viola (Amanda Bynes) is a star in the girl's soccer team at school. Due to lack of girls who would like to join the team, the girls soccer team is ended. Viola's twin brother (Sebastion) goes to London for two weeks so Viola poses as him to get on the guys soccer team. The movie has a nice love triangle - or more than a triangle. It is fun to see how Viola copes with living in a guys dorm. The story is nice, and funny. The acting is good. Overall it is a nice, simple movie to watch.

4.0 out of 5 stars She's the Man - Movie Review, July 31, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: She's the Man (Widescreen Edition) (DVD)
In recent years, the teen comedy has been reduced to raunchy plotlines that barely have enough plot to withhold their 90 minute running time. But, there have been a few exceptions within the mix, including this Shakespeare inspired flick.

In 'She's the Man' (Loosely based on Shakespeare's 'Twelfth Night'), Amanda Bynes plays tomboy/soccer addict Viola who's world is crushed when her school's girls soccer team is cut - when it's suggested that the girls team join forces with the boys, the option is nixed on the spot. But Viola, not one to take this sitting down, finds a chance to prove herself worthy of playing soccer with the guys. While her twin brother Sebastian jets off to London to promote his band, Viola will disguise herself as him and attend his new high school (since his attendance record booted him from his last one) to play soccer with the boys. Once Viola..ehm..Sebastian enters the school, mayhem ensues, especially a messy love triangle too confusing to write down.

The comedic acting by Bynes is always worthwhile watching, that goes beyond other teen actresses of the time. The acting by the movie's mostly unknown teen cast is both enjoyable and believable. Channing Tatum (Bynes love interest), who resembles Chad Michael Murray in both acting and appearance, is good at playing the looked upon playboy who's actually sensitive and shy.

Unlike other teen flicks, 'She's the Man' doesn't resort to the stereotypical teen partying and sexual plotlines that are most commonly present in them today. It's a smart and unpredictable comedy that'll keep you watching until the end credits roll.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a Cute Movie!, June 30, 2006
This review is from: She's the Man (Widescreen Edition) (DVD)
This is such a good movie! It's not all that realistic, but cute all the same. Amanda Bynes is sooo cool! She really made me laugh with all of her jokes and stuff. I usually don't laugh when I watch movies, but man, this was quite an exeption. Channing Tatum has to be one of the hottest guys on the planet!! By himself, he makes up a lot of a good rating. The jokes were funny, the actors and actresses were right on target, and it was an all-around fun, and good teen movie. Some kids in my class said it was the BEST movie they've ever seen, I wouldn't go that far, but if you're looking for a good laugh, you'll find it here. (Or girls who're looking for a hot guy to look at, well, there are tons of them in this movie!)
