5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on politics, past, present and future!, June 1, 2009
This review is from: She's Out There: Essays by 35 Young Women Who Aspire to Lead the Nation: The Next Generation of Presidential Candidates (Hardcover)
What makes this book so great is its so balanced! Has young women from all areas of the country, rich, poor, middle class. And I loved that women in politics from Governor Sarah Palin (R), Senator Mary Landrieu (D), Secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton (D), Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison (R), Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (D), Congresswoman Virginia Foxx (R), have major quotes in the various sections of the book.

And on page 205 there begins a listing of female Presidential candidates, vice presidential candidates, going back to 1872 when Victoria Woodhull was with the Equal Rights Party. Even I who am well informed on politics learned new things.

The writing is so well done and the photographs are so awesome. And having read so many, many books I also loved the paper used for the book since it made reading the book a pure pleasure.

Would make a great gift for young women and women in general, be a birthday, holiday or simply as a surprise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding and inspirational, should be read by all girls, June 5, 2009
This review is from: She's Out There: Essays by 35 Young Women Who Aspire to Lead the Nation: The Next Generation of Presidential Candidates (Hardcover)
Dynamic, determined, idealistic, committed, optimistic and occasionally arrogant are terms that can and should be used to describe the girls and young women profiled in this book. 35 different females contributed a short essay on why they want to and will be President of the United States some day. I applaud the contributors as well as the editors for creating a book that demonstrates a desire to succeed and overcome, something that we certainly can never get enough of. The ages of the contributors starts at 5 and goes up through the early thirties.
Young women cannot help but be inspired by these stories, it is possible for one person to change things if they are determined and pick their causes and battles correctly. I strongly recommend this as reading material for girls in middle school through college. It is one of those books that can change the world by changing people, which is how permanent change is always done.

5.0 out of 5 stars If this sampling is indicative of the leadership out there, there's no doubt our upcoming generations will be in good hands!, June 24, 2009
This review is from: She's Out There: Essays by 35 Young Women Who Aspire to Lead the Nation: The Next Generation of Presidential Candidates (Hardcover)
Their voices are strong. They are opinionated, confident young women. They are our future leaders waiting to serve their fellow men and women. Wieteke Aster Holthuizen, age 15, found herself in a position in which people abused her right to free speech. It wasn't a comfortable position to be in, but nonetheless she stepped up and "decided not to remain silent anymore and to take a stand for what [she felt] strongly about." The thirty-five young women from ages five to thirty-one you will meet in this book all have political and presidential aspirations and express their hopes, fears and strongly voice their opinions. Women are no longer a silent minority. They are people like Chidinma Hannah Nnoromele who come right out and say, "I can do better than that. Let me show ya how it's done." And they will.

Many of the young women you encounter in this book state that they were influenced and spurred to action by listening and watching the "Al Gore and George Bush presidential election." Others were influenced by a myriad of different factors, yet all come across as natural born leaders. Twenty-two-year-old Corina Ulmer learned from her family about "the value of integrity and perseverance" and, most importantly, "the power of the female voice and leadership." Young ten-year-old Hannah, stares firmly into the camera seated atop her pink bicycle, and states that if she becomes president "on Saturdays, everyone in the neighborhood would gather together and pick up trash." Sounds like a plan.

Their plans focus on diverse, sometimes overlapping, concerns and issues. Among them are poverty, international relations, the war on terror, immigration, education, racism, sexism, inspiring people, equal rights, the success of the small business, environmental issues, gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual rights and more. Their voices are unique and vary. And, as Kara Ann Silverman, age twenty-four, so aptly puts, it says that "We are living in an historic and defining age for women and our country, and I cannot afford-no woman can afford-to let opportunities pass by."

This is an absolutely stunning book that should not be passed up. Each essay is preceded by a photograph of the young woman, her name, age, state and the year she is "eligible to run." The text is interspersed with brief commentary from several of the thirty-five current potential presidential possibilities listed in the back of the book, including Governor Sarah Palin and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and has numerous informative "Did You Know" sidebars. In the back of the book is a listing of past female presidential and vice-presidential candidates, those who failed to receive their parties' nomination and a very comprehensive recommended list of "leadership groups and nonprofit organizations." If this small sampling is indicative of the leadership out there, there's no doubt our upcoming generations will be in good hands!
