Review by a future sheltie owner in MA,
By A Customer
This review is from: Shetland Sheepdogs (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals) (Paperback)
I found this to be a good starter book for someone interested in purchasing a Sheltie, or a new owner of a Sheltie. There is good general dog information here, such as housing and supply requirements, general dog care and training, and nutrition. It also describes illnesses and diseases to which Shelties are prone,a brief breed history, and contains color photos. However, I was disappointed that it did not contain more specific breed information, such as examples of the different coat colors, or discuss typical behavior problems such as nuisance barking. This book is a good value, and a good place to start and good general reference, but I would suggest the book "Sheltie Talk", or searching some of the Sheltie web sites available if you are seeking more specific information on this breed.

I found this book to be interesting and informative. I enjoyed the information. It is perfect for the average sheltie owner.

Nothing to write home about,
By Ashtar Command "Seeker" (Stockholm, Sweden) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shetland Sheepdogs (Complete Pet Owner's Manual) (Paperback)
This little book was something of a disappointment. Most of the information is very general, and presumably applies to all small dogs. Or all dogs. Or all living organisms this side of the Andromeda Galaxy.
The little there is about actual Shetland Sheepdogs is badly edited and confusing. It also contradicts other information about this breed. Don't Shelties have "issues"? According to this booklet, they are just fine, especially with kids. Is this a pitch for the Sheltie Pup Association? Or the local Sheltie Shelter? One of my neighbours had a Sheltie. It looked stupid, like a diminutive version of Lassie. But then, perhaps Shetland Sheepdogs aren't much to write home about anyway. |
