This is probably my favorite Gorbachev book - and he has quite a few really good ones! It celebrates the imagination and highlights the relationship between a young boy and his baby brother. A young boy must tell all of his toys to be quiet. He tells the conductor to stop his train, the knights to stop fighting, the clown to stop laughing and the pirates to stop firing their cannons. The reason? His baby brother is sleeping. The young boy looks so sad as he sits alone on his couch amidst all the quiet. Then a wonderful thing happens! Baby brother wakes up and everyone is happy. He gets to play with all of his toys again until... you guessed it. He has to be quiet again. The final page puts a really unexpected tender end on this story as the little boy states that he is quiet because he loves his baby brother.

You couldn't ask for a more thoughtful way to ease the strain a new baby brings to a home already filled with older siblings. It has just the right amount of whimsy that it doesn't become heavy handed, and with it's great read aloud flow it is sure to hold the attention of even the littlest big brother or sister. The little boy is expressive and his toys come to life in these large sketches. This is an excellent choice for any child who is expecting a younger sibling and also for any preschool story time crowd. It achieves that perfect balance of light hearted fun and a good message.

Originally checked this book out from the library. My 2-1/2 year old son loved it so much, he now owns his very own copy. I have since purchased 2 additional copies for gifts - perfect for little boys welcoming a baby brother. The story is cute, simple, and effective. Valeri's illustrations are incredible, and provide the framework to take the story further. Love it.
