The book is OK. Nothing special. Most of the book is written about dogs in general, not just about Shibas. Maybe a good book for people that have never had a dog or people wanting to show
their Shiba. Good price and greating shipping.!

Shibas lovers should pay attention to a hidden info regarding another book of the same author, "Japanese Shiba (Special Rare Breed Edition) ISBN 1-903098-65-3, which is just identical to this one apart from the cover. Be careful not to buy twice the same book...

5.0 out of 5 stars Author shares Shiba experience, January 2, 2005

The author penned a very amusing book on Shibas and shared with us his experience and knowledge of the breed. This is a well organized book for the new Shiba owner or someone contemplating this breed. ... stories and facts are told to tickle the reader; in contrast, Payton's thin tome is packed concisely but serious in delivery. I strongly suggest both books as the best of the lot out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth Having!, January 3, 2007

If you're a Shiba Inu enthusiast, this book will be a welcome addition to your library. It's written by someone who owns and loves Shiba Inus, so unlike other breed-specific books that deal mostly in generalities, this book is specific and reasonably honest. The book is substantial and contains a lot of good, respectable information without being too heavy-handed or condescending. It also contains a lot of beautiful color photography.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential book for Shiba owners., August 4, 2010

I received this book as a gift and, among my collection of Shiba books, this one is the most complete as far as breed information and dog care are concerned.

The book covers the classic Japanese description of the Shiba Inu's temperament as well as the AKC's standards on what the breed should look like. In addition to that, it gives great information for first-time owners so that they can prepare their homes ahead of time for their new puppies and expect no surprises. It also covers basic care, essential training tips, first aid care, health issues (such as vaccinations, genetic disorders, and parasites), and touches on the breeding and showing of the Shiba.

Reading through the book, I found a great deal of information that a first-time dog owner would not normally consider and that a breeder would probably consider as something second-nature or common sense. First aid kits, travel gear, and a vaccination schedule are just a few things listed that might have been overlooked otherwise. The book also goes into detail as to explain the extent of health issues, how they affect the dog, and how they can affect the owner. If anyone can only own just one Shiba book, it would have to be this one with all of the information it holds.

However, if anyone is also interested in discovering even more about their Shiba's Japanese history and the genetics behind why your Shiba appears the way it does, I also recommend The Total Shiba, by Gretchen Haskett. This book is geared more towards breeders and dog showing, but still has excellent information when it comes to Shiba health care, temperament, AKC and Nippon standards, and the show ring.

This book has it all; breed history, characteristics, breed staandard, basic care, puppy care, health care, behavior training and showing in dog shows. The color pictures provide excellent detail and there are detailed drawings that provide additional helpful information. I would highly recommend this book to any person that plans to own a Shiba Inu or currently owns one.

I got this book because we were adopting a Shiba Inu pup. We already have one Shiba & they are an interesting breed. I feel that the more knowledge about the breed that you can gain, the better the relationship will be for everyone. This book has a lot of in depth information that should help any potential Shiba Inu owner. It has lots of pictures to go with the topics.
