The debut album from Shibboleth is a fond voyage through the murky histories of American and British rock. No musical stone was left unturned, except for those that seemed to be rather heavy or slippery. In those rare instances, raucous guitar or organ solos were recorded to distract the listener and regain their trust. Lustful rocking numbers and winsome country laments debate with carnival lunacy as avant-noise dawdles in the kitchen.

Happy Virus Music,
By
This review is from: Shibboleth (Audio CD)
This is a great album full of music that is impossible to describe in simple buzzwords. I would say it was "original" but it reminds me of so many different things: sixties sitcom themes, classic Kinks, touches of instrumental Zappa, elevator music, surf, pop, game show music, the sounds of a carnival in a parking lot, even hints of country-western. Mostly, it's happy music--but not the crap-happy music of contemporary pop radio or the "I'm ironically superior to you" satisfaction of most "alternative music." This is the kind of "happy" that randomly bounces between "genuine joy," "retard glee," and "pre-snap postal worker giddiness." Although they don't really sound like him, the attitude this band exudes reminds me most of classic Jonathan Richman. At first listen, you might think "what the hell is this?" But after the second, you won't be able to get the tunes out of your head.

Happy Sounds,
By Barb (Dallas TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shibboleth (Audio CD)
This CD is so original and just super cool. It is edgy, bouncy and soooo happy. Shibboleth blends their unique sounds in a quirky and a little bit goofy way. Prepare yourself for a fun and decidely different trip. It is mainly instrumental so don't expect vocals. Shibb is not quite jazz and not quite rock/pop--their sound lends a new twist. You will find after listening that your spirits are somehow lifted and you are just in a better mood. What more could you ask from music?
