5.0 out of 5 stars A highly prized and appreciated addition, April 11, 2007
This review is from: Shibori for Textile Artists (Hardcover)
Janice Gunner (Vice President of The Quilters Guild of the British Isle) has been teaching patchwork, quilting and shibori for the past 30 years. Now in "Shibori For Textile Artists", she draws upon her considerable experience and impressive expertise to introduce needlecrafters and fabric artists to the Japanese technique known as 'shibori' (from the Japanese word meaning 'to squeeze or wring'), a practice of dying gathered or bound fabric to produce vivid patterns. Enhanced with more than one hundred colorful illustrations accompanying step-by-step instructions on how to create beautiful, unique, unpredictable shibori effects, "Shibori For Textile Artists" is a complete introductory manual that will have a very special appeal and utility for quilters, embroiderers, and textile artists wanting to master the techniques of shibori in projects of their own. Featuring the historical and cultural background of shibori, and covering techniques involving tied-resist, wrapped-resist, clamp-resist, folded-resist, and pleated-resist, as well as immersion, space, and indigo dying, "Shibori For Textile Artists" will prove a highly prized and appreciated addition to personal, professional, community, and academic library Needlecraft and Fabric Arts reference collections.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully practical book, April 6, 2008

This review is from: Shibori for Textile Artists (Hardcover)
While many books out there show the intricacies of expert-produced shibori, impressive but often far removed from something ordinary crafters can produce at home, this book has clear and simple instructions to produce shibori designs. Full of excellent illustrations, it is a book for practitioners of textile arts and requires little prior experience to get you started.

I received this book for Christmas and have really enjoyed reading it. I can't wait to try out some of the techniques. I love how the author put some history of each technique and relayed how many cultures have used very similar techniques of fabric dying and design.

This book is so beautiful. I ordered it so I could get ideas and see pictures of various tye-dying. The Japanese textile are of Shibori is just unbelievable. Although I'm no master, I enjoyed every page and picture!

4.0 out of 5 stars Shibori for Textile Artists, May 23, 2009
This review is from: Shibori for Textile Artists (Hardcover)
This is a beautiful coffee-table book with all color photos of detailed examples of the techniques of mostly contemporary shibori. This book is a great lesson in what is possible -- most of all the stitching techniques that anyone can do. It is less useful as a practical manual for learning about the dyeing process.
