4.0 out of 5 stars THIS SERIES WAS CANCELED BY THE PUBLISHER
I just wanted to let people know that may think about buying this book and the second one that was released NOT TO. The series was canceled and it would have been much longer than just the two books that came out, so unless you like to not know the end of a story save your money.
I think that AMAZON should be ashamed of themselves for selling this book at full rate...

2.0 out of 5 stars Very "Dusty " plot
As a veteran Fantasy fan, I got tired of this storyline years ago. The hero (or heroine, in this case) sets off traveling the world and gathering companions in a quest to save the world from the forces of darkness and evil. From "The Lord of the Rings" to "Star Wars", its been done to death. This is book one, so it mainly just sets the stage and introduces the characters...

I think that AMAZON should be ashamed of themselves for selling this book at full rate when should it be on super clearance. I know that some people here might think that would be a good idea but I found it to be an enjoyable read. Sad to say we will never know the end.

From "The Lord of the Rings" to "Star Wars", its been done to death. This is book one, so it mainly just sets the stage and introduces the characters. I expect book two will see the heroes barely avoiding disaster only to triumph in book three. As another reviewer said, if I read the follow-up books, I'll plan to borrow them from the library. Like many of its predecessors, the story seems to drag on and on. I prefer my fiction with a little more hope and optomism.

2.0 out of 5 stars Amazingly disappointing!, October 28, 2004
This review is from: Shield of the Sky (Paperback)
I love Susan Krinard books, so may be I expected too much. The book is actually OK, but I was expecting a romance. This is more a sf/fantasy than romance. If you want romance you don't get ANY. As a fanatasy the book is OK, but the ending leaves you frustrated. You feel like you just spent hours having the scene set for the next book and you really didn't get anything of value out of this one. I won't make this mistake again. I'll get the sequel from the library.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting mesh of different ideas..., February 4, 2005
This review is from: Shield of the Sky (Paperback)
Another Luna fantasy, written well, with well-developed characters and worldbuilding.

The story takes place in an 'alternate' history, which means it feels like early european history but the elements of the story begin with that and take it somewhere our history has never been.

At the beginning it felt very native americanish... when it was actually supposed to be Amazonian. However, the story is gripping and I got a real sense of Rhenna very early on.

As we encounter more of the world, and different cultures (or 'spirits'), the story begins to piece itself together. It is the first of a series and you really do feel like the story is really getting somewhere at the end. It will be difficult to wait for the second installation, now that I finally understand what's going on.

There are elements of Greek, Egyptian, and Carthage in culture and feel... and elements of early religion (if you really peel back the layers).

I did enjoy this book and would recommend it. Another great addition to the Luna line.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hooked On Kinard, April 26, 2005
This review is from: Shield of the Sky (Paperback)
This is the first of Susan Kinard's books that I've had the pleasure to read and as of now... I'm hooked! A wonderful story with characters that feel real despite the fact that some display mythical and magical powers. There was for me an underlying message as well; no matter who you call God - there is magnificant power in prayer.
