Review

Exploring the power of words to shape experiences in the world, Smith Warfield, an author, poet, attorney, mediator, mother, and grandmother, acknowledges, There is only one rule: use your words in ways that serve yourself, others, and our planet, not in ways that harm. Like spending an afternoon with an exceptionally insightful friend who wears her mysticism with practical shoes, reading Shift opens readers to possibilities, clearly the author s intention. One of the author s methods for unlocking those possibilities is questioning herself and readers throughout. Questions serve as wake-up calls to stir awareness and consciousness, as they address another challenge: The mystic experience is difficult to express in words. Questions can point the way. The author shares some of her own mystic turning points in anecdotes and poems, asks questions, and explores dualities that sometimes get in the way of non-dualistic consciousness, her term for mystic experiences. She examines sixteen pairs of dichotomous terms including despair and joy, death and life, falsehood and truth, and science and religion, here concluding, Both, if properly applied, are valid, creative vehicles for improving the human condition ...Why not simply practice mutual respect and non-violence? Later chapters include insights on anger and inner peace, Anger is always a messenger telling you there is something in your life you need to change. She moves readers to consider, Do you want to hang onto your anger and frustration? She explains why focus can be so powerful saying, When you focus on what you want and how you re going to get there, your mind isn t able to focus on what you don t want... One of the most innovative discussions possibly troubling to readers with fundamental religious views covers functionality and nonfunctionality as more productive terms than good and evil. A BMW, she notes, when its tires are flat, its battery is disconnected, and is out of gas is not evil. It s just not functional. So, too, with humans: The parts have to work individually and together. She adds, Focus on becoming more functional...Stay serene and detached when others are upset and fighting. As much as she tries to clarify, the territory she claims in this book remains mysterious. Mystical experiences are not easy to put into words, although the author s poems interspersed throughout give readers a richer experience and a taste of what the words point to. She addresses heady ideas like transformed consciousness in multiple ways, encouraging readers to embrace their own processes and possibilities for encountering mystic experiences, saying, We are all on different paths to the same unifying consciousness. Mysticism is ultimately experiential. To tread in this territory, it s advisable to have as patient and wise a guide as Smith Warfield. --Bobbye Middendorf, ForeWord Magazine

Lawyer, grandmother, mediator and poet Janet Smith Warfield presents Shift: Change Your Words, Change Your World, a remarkable self-help guide to adapting one's consciousness to help bring peace to oneself and to the planet, one person at a time. Chapters encourage the reader to be honest with oneself, and attune to one's own thoughts and feelings, while being wary of negative impulses to judge or control other people, and touch upon the big spiritual questions. "None of the world religions has ever been able to define God. God is referred to as a mystery, something beyond human understanding. The word define means to limit. Of course, religions can't define God. What right do we humans have to limit God?" An utterly insightful guide to making sense of timeless wisdom, applicable to readers of all faiths and backgrounds. --Midwest Book Review

On rare occasions, life-altering experiences result in great works of art and literature. Thirty-five years ago, Janet Smith Warfield, had such an experience. This experience became the driving force behind her unique and noteworthy book, Shift: Change Your Words, Change Your World. For 35 years, Janet s artistic challenge was how to use words to communicate her wisdom. She knew that words were part of the human dilemma. Because of their constantly shifting meanings, words miscommunicate. Shift plays with word sculptures, using ordinary words in extraordinary ways to trigger readers minds so that their own unique wisdom and truth can emerge. Reading Shift is not an ordinary read. It s an interactive experience. Janet gently guides, sometimes jolts her readers into increased awareness, consciousness expansion, and living in the present moment. Using word tapestries of poetry, stories, quotations, and questions, enriched with illustrations and unexpected word juxtapositions, Janet helps readers of all backgrounds and faiths to understand and internalize timeless wisdom. The word sculpture experience provides deep insight into personal, vital questions. It helps manifest previously untapped strengths, helping produce win/win outcomes by transforming personal chaos into comfortable harmony. The word sculpture experience provides clues to solving the "Human Truth Puzzle." The author exposes startling new meanings to Friedrich Nietzsche s writings, which, when properly understood, supply a major piece for solving the "Human Truth Puzzle." Unlike mathematical problems, the "Human Truth Puzzle" cannot be solved logically using words and symbols. Knowing that the "Human Truth Puzzle" requires going deep into one s consciousness to know one s own mind and emotions, Janet Smith Warfield provides a road map for readers so they can experience their own higher awareness and truth. --Bernie Nelson, Lightword Publishing

More About the Author

"Resist not evil, but turn the other cheek. "

Thirty-five years ago, Janet Smith Warfield had an extraordinary, life-changing experience. Words she had learned in Sunday school suddenly became crystal clear.

Nothing changed. Yet everything changed. Janet was now looking at the same physical world from a sparkling new perspective.

Janet struggled to put words to this mind-boggling experience. No one understood. How could she use divisive, analytical words to communicate an internal consciousness shift that was whole and undivided?

Janet called her experience a "mystical experience." It complied with William James four characteristics:

1. Passivity (Janet wasn't trying to make it happen.)
2. Transiency (It happened and passed.)
3. Noetic quality (Somehow Janet just knew she knew.)
4. Ineffability (She couldn't communicate it.)

Other cultures have called these experiences "transformation", "salvation", transcendence", "samahdi", "awareness", or perhaps simply an aha experience.

The experience can be analogized to looking at an optical illusion. The lines on the paper don't change. What suddenly changes is human perception.

After 30 years of struggle, Janet finally gave up her efforts to describe the mystical experience. Words that worked well to describe our external physical world just didn't work when talking about human consciousness shifts. Janet shifted her own focus to using words creatively to catalyze the experience in others.

What readers are saying:

1. WOW!
2. Insightful
3. What an experience!
4. Brilliantly done!
5. Life makes sense
6. Greater peace
7. Fun to explore
8. An amazing plan
9. Internalize timeless wisdom

As a result of her own shift from trying to communicate the mystical experience to catalyzing it, Janet now uses words creatively to bring about consciousness shifts in others. In her workshops and award-winning book "Shift: Change Your Words, Change Your World", Janet offers new ways of looking at the optical illusion of life, always giving her readers choices. These choices bring peace, power, and prosperity into tortured lives.

Shift has been translated into Bulgarian and Russian. The English version is being distributed in India. Publishers in Brazil, Spain, Korea, and Germany are looking at it.

Janet is a Philadelphia native with a B.A. in economics from Swarthmore College and a J.D. cum laude from Rutgers School of Law, Camden. She practiced law in Atlantic City for 22 years. Besides being an author, a former attorney and mediator, she is a grandmother, poet, and publisher.

Combining her fascination with words with her passions for personal mastery, non-violence, people, peace, and prosperity, she has studied with Mark Victor Hansen, Robert Allen, Bob Proctor, John Childers, Marshal Sylver, Paul Scheele, Brian Klemmer, Peggy McColl, and T. Harv Eker. She has eaten fire, broken boards with her hand, jumped from eagle poles, walked barefoot on hot coals, and bent a steel rebar with a partner using only her neck. She is a powerful word sculptress who knows how to bring peace into troubled lives.

Most books in this field do not live up to their hype. Oftentimes, a book promises a lot but delivers very little. This book is the exception. It delivers more than promised by a brilliant author who does the ordinary (writing) extraordinarily well.

I have been on the Internet since the late 80's. I am rather well known for my personal growth and professional development work. I am not saying that to impress you but rather to let you know that I am not some guy off the street. I have been around for a few years and I know the difference between a good book and an outstanding one.

SHIFT is an outstanding work of art. Yes, a work of art in that the author paints with her words. She paints a masterpiece with words that will inspire you to become the fully expressive, passionate human being you always dreamed you could be. Her words will pierce through your self-imposed limitations so you will experience yourself as the magnificent, powerful person God intended you to be.

In my lifetime, I have read over 6,000 books, magazines and articles dealing with personal growth and spiritual development issues. To date, hands down, SHIFT is the best book I have ever read on the subject.

I rarely recommend books. If you Google me, you will find in all of my years on the Internet, at the most, I have recommended fourteen books. Today, SHIFT as the fifteen book I have reviewed, is at the top of my recommendation list. I guarantee you, after reading it, it will be at the top of your recommendation list, too. - Frederick Zappone, Author of the Feeling GOOD, No Matter What, Newsletter. - [...]

Thirty-five years ago the author had a life-altering experience. Since then she devoted her efforts to understanding and conveying wisdom using word sculptures as her vehicle, challenged by the constantly shifting meanings of words. Her book is an exceptional tool for consciousness expansion. The word sculpture experience incorporates poetry, illustrations, stories, quotations, and questions- all different word tools for increased awareness, living in the present, and peace within. This unique book accelerates perception by including ink blots, cloud patterns, ambigrams, optical illusions, a consciousness diagram, and a discussion of the "Human Truth Puzzle." The work combines ordinary words in extraordinary ways to jump start readers' minds so that each person's unique wisdom can emerge. Even a beginner can understand this university level word course.

Janet Smith Warfield is an extraordinary writer with profound insight. She has an awesome plan. This plan just might make you wish to change the way you live. In creating this book she has used poetry and many quotations, they all work beautifully together.

A mystical experience changed Janet's perceptions. She suddenly gained startling new insights, which she is sharing. Naturally, one would like an exact description of a mystical experience. Too bad.

The book contains both complex ideas and practical solutions that would allow one to handle situations in a positive healthy manner. The suggestions would potentially make a difference to the individual and to the world. You might wonder what a world would be like if one constructively managed his anger. Would prisons even be needed?

This small book is gigantic in scope. As you read Shift you may wish to ponder over one section and at the same time want to know what the next section will contain. The book moves. It is about human consciousness and the factors involved in making a change. It's about ideas. It's about language. The reason words have different meanings to different people is explained. It illustrates how changing words changes attitude. It's about perception, awareness, and creativity, it's about taking care of yourself, protecting yourself and dealing with life's problems constructively. It's about choosing how you wish to live, it's about life and death and energy. It's about you and me and our planet.

A heaven without a hell? Peace without war? The "Here After" right here? Could a "human consciousness shift" lead to such a possible outcome?
If you find such thoughts disturbing, this book may not be for you.

I highly recommend this book for everyone else on the planet. It is a reading experience you will enjoy more than once.

Janet Smithe Warfield's "Shift" is a beautifully written book with a beautiful message. She analyzes the way our minds formulate our thoughts and how important it is to choose the right words when thinking and speaking both. Janet had a mystical experience one day in the presence of an irritating person who was yelling at her," angry, arrogant and rude." She did not think through her behavior but just decided not to react the way most of us normally would. She literally turned the other cheek. in this nano-second Janet was changed forever. She immediatly saw that she had a choice how to respond and our usual over emotional reactions to situations that trouble us exacerbate the situations and that we can always choose how we feel and defuse the environment around us of its tension. In this slim, elegant volume, she spells out through her theme of word-sculpting, how we can "overcome" our lower selves and attain freedom in that overcoming.

Sprinkled with her word-sculpted poetry throughout, Janet puts down her ideas in amazingly clear and uncomplicated language. Her Biblical references are numerous and yet she sees the ancient book through a new lense, a modern, evolved way of understanding. Her discussions on fear and courage, parents and children, choices and decisions, anger and freedom, consciousness and unconsciousness are enlightening and persuasive.

In the middle of the book there is a list of principles by which to live that serves as wonderful checklist for anyone seeking peace of mind and joy in spirit. "Make Your play your life's work," "Polish all facets of your diamond personailty, "focus on becoming more functional . . . "
are just a few. Along with these she offers examples, affirmations, visualizations and steps to awareness.
