Book Description

July 3, 2007
Peter Pendennis killed and dissected eleven people before they caught him. Now he was safely locked away in an institution--but one of the multiple personalities he is host to claims to be the astronaut John Bruce, who is now running for President of the United States. And when Pendennis is confronted with Louise Callander, Bruce's former girl friend, he tells her things that only the real John Bruce could know. Nick Stubbs, a scientist investigating the nature of multiple dimensions in their connection to the human brain, was called in to investigate--and now very much regrets it.

Someone is killing people, leaving their parts scattered in places where Nick has been, and the police think he's the prime suspect. The modus operandi of the murderer is identical to that of Peter Pendennis--but he apparently is still securely under lock and key. Nick knows that John Bruce had tested a new faster-than-light ship using higher dimensions, and had reported a strange, almost religious experience. Was part of his personality left behind, becoming attached to Peter Pendennis? Soon, Nick and Louise are on the run. But how can they escape a killer who seems to be unbound by any restraints of space and time?

More About the Author

Chris Dolley is an author, a pioneer computer game designer and a teenage freedom fighter. That was in 1974 when Chris was tasked with publicising Plymouth Rag Week. Some people might have arranged an interview with the local newspaper. Chris created the Free Cornish Army, invaded the country next door, and persuaded the UK media that Cornwall had risen up and declared independence. As he told journalists at the time, 'It was only a small country, and I did give it back.'

In 1981, he created Randomberry Games and wrote Necromancer, one of the first 3D first person perspective D&D computer games.

In 2004, his acclaimed novel, Resonance, was the first book plucked out of Baen's electronic slushpile.

Now he lives in rural France with his wife and a frightening number of animals. They grow their own food and solve their own crimes. The latter out of necessity when Chris's identity was stolen along with their life savings. Abandoned by the police forces of four countries who all insisted the crime originated in someone else's jurisdiction, he had to solve the crime himself. Which he did, and got a book out of it - the International bestseller, French Fried: One Man's Move to France With Too Many Animals And An Identity Thief.

He writes SF, Fantasy, Mystery, Humour and Memoir. His novelette, Magical Crimes, was the number one bestselling free short story at Amazon UK in December 2011.

And if you like funny stories with cute pictures of kittens saving the planet, International Kittens of Mystery is the book for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heart-pounding, Scifi Mystery, October 2, 2007
This review is from: Shift (Hardcover)
Serial killer Peter Pendennis is locked away in the psych ward at Upper Heywood. Suffering from multiple personality disorder, Peter shocks his doctor when a personality surfaces who happens to be astronaut John Bruce. Louise Callander, John's old girlfriend, is called in to talk to Peter/John to confirm if he knows things that only John would know. Nick Stubbs is then asked to look into the matter, as he has performed experiments in other dimensions dealing with the brain.

But when a body is found, brutally slain in Peter Pendennis fashion, Nick realizes someone is trying to frame him. Pendennis is supposedly still incarcerated. So how can Nick stop a serial killer who isn't bound by physical dimensions?

Shift is an exciting and shocking futuristic thriller. The characters are original, and the imagery pulls you in. Incorporating heart-pounding suspense and an inventive twist of science fiction, I enjoyed this story even more than Dolley's Resonance. This is another author I'll definitely be watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars great science fiction mystery, August 8, 2007
This review is from: Shift (Hardcover)
Astronaut scientist John Bruce discovered the means to travel through extra-dimensional space. While testing his new ship design, he insisted he had a religious inspirational experience. Considered a hero and extremely popular amongst his fellow Americans, John runs for President.

Convicted serial killer Peter Pendennis has been locked away ever since he was convicted of and slicing and dicing eleven victims. Psychiatrists working with Peter conclude he suffers from multiple personalities. However, shockingly one of his egos claims to be astronaut John Bruce. To prove his claim Peter informs Bruce's former girlfriend Louise Callander things that only the real astronaut and she are aware of. Studying the impact of multiple dimensions on the brain, research scientist Nick Stubbs interviews Peter in his Bruce persona. At the same time someone is killing people using the dissecting M.O. of the incarcerated Pendennis; the prime suspect is Nick.

SHIFT is a great science fiction mystery that will have the audience wondering who the killer is. The story line is fast-paced but brilliantly driven by the strong cast as each key player is fully developed to include several of the Pendennis personalities. RESONANCE is exciting and the strong characters are totally believable. Chris Dolley mesmerizes his audience.
