Book Description

Shifter Made by Jennifer Ashley

Alanna, sister to a Fae prince, is sent on a thankless mission--to return to medieval Ireland and coerce a Shifter to craft an incredible sword. Niall O’Connell, master sword maker of the old Kingdom of Ciarraí, hates Fae, resenting the time when Shifters were little better than Fae slaves. But Alanna's heartbreaking story and her beauty are difficult to resist. Together, she and Niall forge a sword that changes Shifter history, at the same time forging an unbreakable bond between themselves.

This novella is prequel to the Shifters Unbound series, a standalone story that tells how the Sword of the Guardian came to be.

This is a 10,000 word novella. It also appears in print in the Mammoth Book of Irish Romance (Running Press, 2010).

2.0 out of 5 stars Short Story May 26, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a prequel to Jennifer Ashley's Shifter series. It tells the story of how Niall and Alanna meet. I wanted to like this story, since I have enjoyed other Jennifer Ashley novels. But this is a very, very short story. So short, it almost reads like cliff notes to a longer story. And because of the length, the romance between Niall and Alanna feels too rushed. It isn't long enough for much character development, so I never got invested in the main characters. I will stick to her full length novels in the future. The price of this book is only 99 cents, but be forewarned, you really do get what you pay for here.

"Shifter Made" which was previously published in the Mammoth Book of Irish Romance (this review is a a reincarnated version of my review from that anthology) is a short little prequel to Ashley's Shifters Unbound series. Set back in time and in Ireland, Shifter Niall, who is an ancestor to the leads in the Primal Bonds and Pride Mates is forced to forge a magical sword for the hated Fae as ransom for his kidnapped children. But during the forging he is aided by a Fae women, who is supposed to help him inbue the sword with magic, a woman who may change his feelings about the Fae or at least about one Fae woman in particular. -

Shifter Made is the story of the forging of the Guardian's sword which plays a significant role in both of the Shifters Unbound books, but the story stands alone well apart from the series and vice versa. The story has a good set up and a good ending but it is too short to have a satisfying middle - the transition is rushed as the starring pair just jump from being enemies to being more. The bottom line is despite the length it still ended up being pretty good, but since it is an interesting little fill-in to the series it may appeal more to Shifter Unbound fans than newbies.

This story is a prequel to the Shifters Unbound series (which I have yet to read) but is entertaining on its own. A quick read.

3.0 out of 5 stars I liked it but the story felt too squished! July 29, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I read this after reading nearly all the other Shifters Unbound series and I recommend you read at least one of the full-length novels before you read this one as the importance of the sword to the Shifters isn’t exactly emphasized in this novella. However, it is also a good start to the series itself, taking place hundreds of years before the rest of the novels, when the Fae had yet to fully abandon our world. As with all of Jennifer Ashley’s stories, this is a romance. A hard romance between a Feline Shifter – Niall – and a Fae woman – Alanna – and how they came to forge the Sword of the Guardian, and more especially, why.

Personally, it was a nice, but very short read, though I felt it could have been a little more drama surrounding the Fae/Shifter hatred those two should be experiencing. And it was really too short to like or dislike the main protagonists and it obviously wasn’t deeply involved. However, for a short fluffy explanation piece, it was well done. 3 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Meh... January 5, 2015

I know that this is a novella trying to lead you into the real series, but I found the story line a bit blah. While the forbidden attraction between shifter and fae is plausible, I didnt feel that it was realistic for them to spend what they thought may be their last night on earth shifting from hating each other to being in love with each other within a matter of ten minutes. I am going to give this series another chance, and start reading the first book. We shall see how it goes...

5.0 out of 5 stars Shifter Made (Shifters Unbound) A Novell November 25, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a wonderful story that is a prequel to the Shifter Unbound series. It is a story of the creation of the Guardian's sword. This is the love story between Niall the sword maker and Alanna, the Fae princess. Alanna asks Niall to make this sword for her brother the Prince.
I read Shifter Made in one sitting and was delighted with the happily ever after ending.

The prequel to the Shifters Unbound series was enlightening and interesting. I found the story fun but lacked the intensity of the rest of the series.
