I WAS NOT PAYING ATTENTION. I JUST ASSUMED THAT THIS WAS A NEW BOOK BY PATRICIA BRIGGS AND COULD NOT WAIT TO HAVE A NICE READ. INSTEAD IT IS A REISSUE OF TWO EARLY EARLY BOOKS PACKAGE TOGETHER WITH A NEW TITLE AND NEW COVER (AT FIRST GLANCE THE BOOK SEEMS TO BELONG TO THE ALPHA AND OMEGA SERIES BY THE SAME AUTHOR). IT IS MY OWN FAULT BUT IT IS ANNOYING. SO BUYER BEWARE AND READ THE PRINT.

When I first bought this I was mad, I foolishly thought it was a third book in the series... But when I read it I found the re-writes to Masques to be so indepth that it kind of is a third book. Happy with my purchase.

I like Patricia Briggs' modern werewolf series, but had not read any of her earlier books. The first of the 2 books in this volume is good, but not as well done as the second. These books are not as good as the later series, author has improved with experience. Nevertheless, this volume is worth reading: a good story line and good characters.

At the beginning of the novel, Patricia Briggs says that it isn't the best thing she's written, and I can accept that . . . but the rest of what she says doesn't ring that same bell. I real Laurel K. Hamilton, and many others - and I found 'Shifters Wolf' to be the equal of many of their stories, and better than some. If this is what she thinks of her early works, I wish I were young enough to read her work in 20 more years. Her maturity as an author is visible, but not, I think, harmful to the story, which I found absorbing, and quite excellent.

I read nearly anything, since I'm a disabled Vietnam Veteran, and have the time to do so - and my favorite are SF and FSF novels, but I read action stories, westerns, spy novels - and so far, she is 'as good as it gets'.

BEWARE! This is a compilation of two previous books by the author. If you have already read Masquesand Wolfsbane (Aralorn), do not buy this book.

Also, this is NOT part of the Mercy Thompson or the Alpha and Omega series.

It is, however, a very good book to purchase if you have not already read the previous books.

Masques is Patricia Briggs' very first novel, originally published in 1993. As she states in the introduction, she has gotten much better at writing since then! But happily she decided to brush up the original only slightly and as a result we get to enjoy the ups and downs of a first novel, and to see just how much she has improved over the years. Masques is a fun book, and well worth the time to read. The sequel, Wolfsbane, was published in 2010, and the writing style is more what current Patricia Briggs' readers have come to expect.

The story is involved and entertaining, the characters are memorable, and reading them is time well spent.

I am happy to see them re-releasing these stories but sad that they are not a totally new book. As always her characters are interesting and complex. I like these characters and their relationship and it is a highly enjoyable story that I was ready to read again. In some ways I like her earlier work best and wish she would add to it. If you are new to Patricia Briggs work, this is a good introduction and well worth the time and money.

Shifter's Wolf is a compilation of two novels written by Patricia Briggs. Masques was the first book she wrote. It didn't sell very well and went out of print in 1995. Wolfsbane, its' sequel, was written without a publisher and sat on a shelf for a while. After becoming successful (Mercy Thompson and Alpha and Omega), the author was able to do a polish of Masques and include the sequel in this edition.

I am a big fan of Patricia Briggs and, while I can see the newness of her writing in Masques, I was completely entranced by the story of Aralorn and Wolf. Briggs knows how to write a strong female protagonist and a male lead who compliments her. Aralorn is a spy who is tasked with gathering intelligence on the head mage of the land. She discovers evil at work and has to use all of her talents (including shapeshifting) to save her life and those around her. Wolf, her friend, plays a much more important role than she even imagined. In Wolfsbane, Aralorn and Wolf head back to her childhood home to determine who killed her father and why.

It's difficult to separate these two stories as they flow so well and the plot moves fluidly between them. Aralorn is almost perfect as a paranormal leading lady. She is strong, independent and loyal. She's also stubborn and gets herself into dangerous situations. Wolf is....wolf. He is enigmatic, dangerous but fiercely loyal to Aralorn. We slowly learn his secrets along with her.

This is written as a fantasy and the world building is done well. While there is a love story, there are no love triangles to be seen and it's not the primary focus of the plotline.

Overall, I really enjoyed both stories. I will admit that Masques was probably my favorite of the two simply because it was so earnest. It wasn't as polished as the author's later works but she was true to her storytelling and that means a lot to a reader. 4/5 stars and highly recommended.

I really loved the book!! What I don't like is publishing companies adding an older editions of other books that have been out for awhile already.
