Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Dailey, veteran author of more than 100 romance novels, seven of which belong to the Calder family saga (Green Calder Grass, etc.), adds another immensely readable installment to this two-decades-old series. At the novel's outset, patriarch Chase Calder is shot and presumed dead while on a business trip in Texas. The incident leaves Chase with a mild head wound and a case of amnesia. The only people he feels he can trust are the man who saved him, a mysterious cowboy named Laredo Smith, and Laredo's mother, Hattie, who is a registered nurse. When Laredo learns Chase's identity from the hotel where Chase had been staying, he packs Hattie and Chase in his truck and heads to the Triple C Ranch in Montana, where Chase's "funeral" is underway. There he forms an alliance with Chase's widowed daughter-in-law, Jessy, and they make plans to stash Chase away in an old line-shack on the ranch until he regains his memory or until Laredo unmasks Chase's shooter. Although Dailey's prose is occasionally awkward ("In swift reaction, he came to full alertness"), readers can count on the usual dose of romance between Laredo and Jessy, as well as the reappearance of countless characters from previous Calder books-including spiteful Tara Calder, colorful Culley O'Rourke and Sheriff Logan Echohawk. This book will be a homecoming for many of the series' followers, but new readers would be wise to start with book one (This Calder Sky, 1981) before immersing themselves in this homespun tale.

From Booklist

Chase Calder regains consciousness not knowing who he is butsure that someone tried to kill him. A mysterious and charismaticcowboy named Laredo rescues Chase and with the help of his friend,Hattie, nurses him back to health. Laredo does a little snooping andsoon figures out that the amnesia victim he's caring for is one of therichest, most powerful ranchers in Montana--which doesn't explain whyChase is injured and in Fort Worth. With only his widoweddaughter-in-law, Jessy, knowing that he isn't dead, Chase and his twonew friends hide out until his memory returns, and in the meantime,Hattie starts looking pretty good to Chase. This tale continues theCalder family saga, which has been popular ever since This CalderSky (1981) came out and which includes such recent titles asCalder Pride (1999) and Green Calder Grass (2002). Dailey'slatest romantic suspense, with all its secrets, intrigue, andmachinations, especially Laredo's Remington Steele-type background, will continue to please. Shelley Mosley

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting!!, July 2, 2003
This review is from: Shifting Calder Wind (Hardcover)
Near the deserted stockyards of Fort Worth, Laredo saves the "old" man's life when he made noises which forces the assassin to leave the area before insuring the killer completed the job. Laredo takes the injured individual away from the crime scene, but the man with no memory insists he won't go to a hospital for fear his unknown foe will return. Obliging the amnesiac, Laredo takes him to a small spread owned by someone close to him, Hattie, a former nurse. The next day, Laredo learns that Montana rancher Chase Calder reportedly died in a fiery car crash. However, Laredo soon realizes that Chase is alive though not quite well and is with Hattie.

Two years ago someone murdered his son and now with the attempt on his own life, Chase decides the best chance of identifying his wannabe killer is to remain dead for a while. With Laredo's help he returns to Montana where they enlist his widowed daughter-in-law Jessy to help them keep the secret even from beloved kin like his daughter until the scoundrel is found as the less who know the better the chances of success.

The latest Calder tale is an exciting suspense thriller that fans of the series will enjoy. The story line is loaded with action from the moment Laredo saves Chase's life. Though the villain seems strange, readers will appreciate this entry especially the "Cat" wars against Jessy and several blossoming relationships. Janet Dailey has provided another fine story that her audience will enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome Addition, September 23, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Shifting Calder Wind (Hardcover)
For those who have read all the Calder Series this is a welcome addition. When I read the back cover I was unsure I would like the plot. However, Janet did a wonderful job capaturing my interest once again...I didn't think there could possibly be another book after the death of Ty Calder in Green Calder Grass! This book surprized me and even though I had figured out before the end who the killer was...I couldn't put the book down.
I agree with the others who have wrote reviews...Janet locks you into the fantasy of wanting to be a part of the Calder family or at least we can all dream of a living on a ranch in Big Sky Country!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dreamy and Addictive, August 3, 2003

This review is from: Shifting Calder Wind (Hardcover)
Shifting Calder Wind -- my oh my, what can I say?!
It was sassy, saucy, sensual, ...., secretive and thoroughly satiable. It was a joy to read, as all Calder saga books are.
And I think I will forever dream of being Maggie by the riverside with Chase for the first time, and will always have my dreamboy as a cowboy in dress stetson riding the rolling plains of The Triple C.

If You Have Not Bought This Book, what are you waiting for? it continues the Calder Legacy, with all the juicy ingredients that make Janet Dailey books, what they are.
Addictive.
