Mechanical Engineering Students thoughts,

This review is from: Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design (Mcgraw-Hill Series in Mechanical Engineering) (Hardcover)
This book is good, but there are a number of problems that I have with it. First, the writing within the text is sometimes too dense, technical and not straight forward enough for the undergraduate engineering student, making it hard to read. Second, there are not enough footnotes and/or annotations for students to make connections between the different equations, which, in fact, do relate to each other. Last, there is the problem with application of gear design to CAD programs, which renders the chapter on gear design useless to the student. In short, this class is all about who is teaching from the text and not the text because of the flaws mentioned above.
However, the book does have concrete, clear examples of the application of properties and equations in the text.

Good advanced Mechanics book,
This review is from: Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design (Mcgraw-Hill Series in Mechanical Engineering) (Hardcover)
This book is used for me for two different semesters. One for Solid Mechanics and one for Machine Design. The book it decent but it is no book by Hibbler. Some of the units in this book looked like it was wrote by two different people in two different countries.

Worst Book Ever,

This review is from: Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design (Mcgraw-Hill Series in Mechanical Engineering) (Hardcover)
Used this for two classes. Most frustrating book I've ever used. Machine design is a subject made of examples and this book never has enough. Whatever help this book might have to offer is always scattered, piecemeal, and incomplete. I seriously hate using this book. It also has mistakes in it. If your school uses this book, you should wait to take the class while petitioning them to switch to another text. I'm not sure what else is out there, but I don't believe it could be worse.

This book helps you analyze complex parts. The first section is on the material components that parts are made of. The second section gives you an in depth analysis of static loading, and concentration factors of stress. Then you have fatigue analysis of parts. This ranges from simple shear on beams, to stress on bearings, and gear teeth. I haven't had the chance to read the remainder of the book, but at the end, there is a case study of the fatigue analysis of a transmission. If you're a Mechanical Engineering major I recommend this book.

This was a mandatory textbook used for one of my mechanical engineering courses and I absolutely hate it. It lacks the necessary examples throughout the chapters, and the examples it does have are only helpful for information that is already easy to understand.A lot of the answers in the back of the book are incorrect and the information in the appendices is hard to find at times. I wouldn't recommend this book for people who are interested in the subject matter.

Very dissapointed,
This review is from: Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design (Mcgraw-Hill Series in Mechanical Engineering) (Kindle Edition)
Like others, I was expecting much more than just a bunch of formulas to implement. Although there are examples on how to solve problems, there isn't explanations on why you use those formulas. I believe that inhibits the reason for learning the material when all you do is just follow the format simply because the example showed it that way. What I am getting at is that there's no explanation on why the formulas exist.

One of the worst books I ever had to use. Txt is poorly organized and many end of chapter txt questions can not be answered with what you learn from the book.

This book is definitely a book that I will own for the rest of my life. I bought it for a class, and it is very helpful in many aspects of Mechanical Engineering. The formulas and tables are easy to find and understand.. I would recommend this book to any Mechanical Engineering student.

Book was in great condition (I did buy it new, so one would hope), but it took a little longer to arrive than was originally estimated. However, I am still waiting on another book from Amazon that was ordered on the same day, so I was happy to receive this one.
