This review is from: Shih Tzu: Your Happy Healthy Pet (Hardcover)
This is a great book for Shih Tzu owners. Very detailed in every area from the history of these dogs, through training, health and grooming. Jo Ann White provides all the information you need to enjoy your Shih Tzu puppy and she provides a detailed training schedule to follow. A nice compact book loaded with lots of information and excellent references to clubs and web sites. A great handbook for every day in the life of your Shih Tzu!

Getting a shih tzu puppy or other small dog breed, this book is for you!, November 21, 2010
This review is from: Shih Tzu: Your Happy Healthy Pet (Hardcover)
This book was recommended to me by the breeder we just purchased our puppy from.
I was not as concerned in reading about the history of the breed as I was more interested in coat care, health concerns and training since I have no prior experience with the breed. This book packs such a punch in regard to all the things I was hoping to find as well as much more.
I've read quite a few books lately on training our new addition, even some of Cesar Milan's books, and by far this is the best. I read the kindle version and was so impressed and wanted to be able to have a hard copy on the kitchen counter to refer to for training so ordered the hardback copy as well. I love that you get a complete schedule for your puppy. For pups under 10 weeks you go to her website and print it for free from there.
The way she tells you to teach sit, stay, come, etc. are all in such a positive way, and she really impresses upon you how easy having a well behaved pet can be, and how you being calm and sticking to a nice schedule is the way to go. Even the deterrent or correction used does not make your puppy look at you as a threat since there is no punishing him. He/she will always look at you the pack leader for safety not with fear in his/her eyes. I love the marking the good behaviors and giving them names. This is such a common sense approach to dog training.
Anyone with a new puppy can benefit from the positive techniques in the book to train your dog.
This book has set me at ease and made me feel well prepared for when we bring our puppy home.
Regardless of dog breed this is a must have on the shelf just for the dog training portions of this book.
If you only want to read one book on dog training regardless of breed, this is the one I'd grab.

This is a nice book with good illustrations, May 11, 2009
This review is from: Shih Tzu: Your Happy Healthy Pet (Hardcover)
The book is through in it's attempt to educate the owners of Shih-tzu puppies. It is however, only a general over view and does not go into detail about things such as potty training and basic training in order to have a well mannered Shih tzu
