One of my all-time favourite Klezmer CDs,
By NY Lou "Lou" (New York, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Di Shikere Kapelye (Audio CD)
This is simply a brilliant CD. I don't think it got the attention that it deserved when it was released a few years ago, and that is a shame, because it is a groundbreaking klezmer CD. On the album, Frank London creates a magnificent punchy and energetic brass band sound and brings it to klezmer. Imagine if a Gypsy Balkan brass band played klezmer, only better, and that is what you have here. It is completely infectious. His followup - BROTHERHOOD OF BRASS is equally wonderful. I'd highly recommend them both.

If I were asked to rate this CD by musicianship alone I would have given it a 5, but my normal instinct to heep praise on Frank London's kop was tempered only by the fact that the album sounds like what it reportedly is: a collection of great musicians who gathered to play some favorite brass/wind tunes in one sitting, with a minimum of fuss. Heavenly arrangements and production are a hallmark of much of London's work, and they are missing here. But if you want a brass blowout with a klezmer twist, this is your CD. These tunes are designed to put the hoohah back in your hoolyeh!
