Entertaining, but nothing special,

This is an alternate history story set in a modern day world where the Confederacy won and the USA and CSA are cold war type enemies. The confederacy has developed a plot to steal an atomic weapon from the USA, but two separate underground organizations within the CSA are looking to foil this plot for their own (conflicting) ends.If you enjoy alternate history stories, you may enjoy this one. And I did enjoy it myself...but I'll also admit that there's little original in this novel. It's really more for fans of the genre than for readers who just want to dabble with an occasional alternate history story.

Had I read "The Shiloh Project" before I read any of the Harry Turtledove alternative novels of the Civil War, I would probably loved the effort. While I enjoyed most of the book, I was disappointed in the brevity of the book and the speed in which characters were developed. I would loved to have known more about each character and what made them tick other than hatred or racism. My only other gripe is that it portrayed the U.S. as a nation with benevolent interests in maintaing a Cold War peace with the CSA. It would have been more realistic to view them as a nation plotting revenge for the Civil War.Overall, it's not a bad read. It just wasn't as good as I anticipated. |
