4.0 out of 5 stars Replacement cranks, August 16, 2011

I bought these to replace the original cranks on my 1992 Specialized Rockhopper. These run slightly lower gearing which helps on the long climbs, and the lower top end is hardly noticed as I spend most of my time on the dirt. The rock guard is plastic, and I'm skeptical on how long it will last, but it's done fine so far ( two months). My only issue with them is the paint on the crank arms started coming off immediately (heels hit the arms a tiny bit).

5.0 out of 5 stars Alivio crankset, July 10, 2011
This review is from: Shimano Alivio M411 Hybrid Crankset (Black) (Sports)
I'm converting an older mtn. bike to more of a hybrid so decided to try this 48/38/28 setup rather than the steeper gearing that was stock. I did have to get a new bottom bracket as the spindle needed to be longer on my bike. The quality of this crankset looks very good, perfect for heavy recreational use. The picture didn't show it but mine did come with a plastic chainguard installed, nice for preventing pants from getting snagged in the teeth.

I purchased this crankset to replace the original equipment Suntour crankset that was on my bike. It's a very high quality component but seems to be a little on the heavy side. Most of the weight appears to be in the very rugged crank arms. The weight is not a problem for the bike that I have but may be a detriment if installed on one of the lighter weight, high tech bikes of today. A strong point of this crankset is: the chain wheels can be easily removed. This crankset is a perfect fit for the bike that I have which is a 1999 Palomar GT. The crankset appears to be virtually indestructable.

The reason that I have given it only 4 stars is because of its weight.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't beat for the price, September 7, 2011

It would be difficult to find a better crankset for this price. The Shimano Alivio M411 crankset looks sleek, isn't too heavy and yet is quite sturdy. It comes with a small chainguard which is hardly noticeable yet does a good job of protecting. Was extremely easy to install and the individual replaceable chainrings seem easy to replace as well.
