5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product!
I purchased this for my old school early 90's road/commuter bike. I am using it with a shimano mega range 7 speed freewheel, and it works great. Easy, and smooth shifting!

1.0 out of 5 stars Broke immediately
I found this difficult to install, as the instructions were very poor. Since it was an exact replacement, I had taken pictures and was able to find good instructions on line. I installed it, and on the test ride, first time I tried to shift the plastic part snapped in half. I have installed the old one, the same way that I installed the new one, and it works fine...

5.0 out of 5 stars Work great for what it costs, September 6, 2010

My rear derailleur bent from the crash. It still worked; but I finally stopped being cheap and replaced it with this new same model. Everything works great now. This cheap RD will serve you well if you know how to properly installed and tune it (like every other RD-cheap or expensive). With proper installation, it shifts very smoothly and has good snappy response. I recomment this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to Install, and I'm Only 12!!!!!!!, January 17, 2012

This review is from: Shimano Altus Mountain Bike Rear Derailleur - Direct Mount - RDM310 (Misc.)
After I went way to hard on my bike in the woods with my friend (being the test-monkey in up to 20" deep puddles), my rear derailleur broke, so my mom, the real user, bought me a new one. It shipped here in about 4 days. When I got home from school and found it sitting in the box, I was EXTREMELY excited. I went into the garage, placed the tools on the ground, and started fixing my Schwinn bike. I thought it was going to be hard, but it was a piece of cake. I didn't even need the instructions! Who says fixing these parts of a bike is impossible? It's indeed a good product and is easily put on. Luckily, it didn't need any assembly and came in 1 piece. Now, my rear derailleur might break again cause I ride the bike way to much!!!!! I ride the bike every day about a mile and listen to my Ipod the whole way. I'm so thankful my bike is fixed. This is a good product and if you have doubts about buying this, back-up and rethink your answer. GOOD PRODUCT!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best online purchase I can remember., October 18, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
What started out as a simple repair ended in an inexpensive, very satisfying upgrade. I began my repairs by searching and only needing a replacement for a broken hanger. My Tourney derailleur was a bit worn and worked horribly. I was expecting and willing to pay between $40 to 60, which is still being relatively cheap, so that I could feel confident in having great quality on my bike. The name 'Shimano' is supposed to be synonymous with quality, but my Tourney works like garbage. I was searching for the Shimano 'Alivio' but noticed the 'Altus' at half the price. The Alivio I had seen on many bikes in bike stores as a standard for low to mid range mountain bikes and even street bikes. I decided that instead of going big I would give the 'Altus' a try, like betting on an underdog. I am so glad I did and totally satisfied with the results.

Installation and adjustment took minutes. One test ride and a final adjustment and it works beautifully through all 21 gears (7 in the rear). Smooth shifting and quiet, usually, unless stressed with torque. I finally feel confident in taking this mountain bike to the top of Santiago Peak.Shimano Altus Mountain Bike Rear Derailleur - Direct Mount - RDM310.

Had a little spill on my Target Special (Schwinn Tourist) and the factory derailleur snapped just under the mounting bolt. Long walk back to the car. Realizing now that I should have spent more money on a better bike, I figured this replacement derailleur would hold me over. If you do your research and read about the limit screws and how to initially mount the derailleur, as well as adjusting it, it really isn't that hard to get this thing tuned. In fact, it only took me about 30 minutes. The hard part was getting the bike off the ground to test the gears. I looked on the Shimano web site. They only advertise their high end stuff, so you need to enter the model number you're curious about and they have documents on-line pertaining to mounting/adjusting as well as an exploded view that helped me to understand how it specifically worked. Of course, most of the same documentation was included in the box.

Just remember, you'll need to keep the original derailleur hanger. Just detach with the larger hex bolt that mounts it.

I'm very happy with it knowing the potential limitations of not spending upwards of 100 dollars for a better one. I'm really surprised about this bike, though. Growing up, we thrashed our Schwinn bikes and they held up like tanks. Guess you get what you pay for nowadays.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice upgrade, August 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Upgraded the kid's old Huffy mtn bike with this new deraileur. Shifting now is much smoother than the rusted junk that came with it. Just had to fine tune the adjustments with the cassette and was good to go. A great value for the price and hard to find spare parts at your local bike shop. If you can find the parts at all these days on the shelf.

Wow, now they make deraillers out of plastic, even the gears. No wonder why they break when they scratch up against a tree.

What bothers me most is that the entire $ 300 Mongoose bike is made virtually useless becuause the small tab that holds the derailler is so prone to bending. If you're going to make a frame out of Aluminum, at least beefen up the weak points.

Wow, I miss my 1972 Schwinn Stingray. You couldn't break that bike if you tried.
