4.0 out of 5 stars Peddling easier, November 9, 2006
The gears and ratio were great, the only problem encountered was the Locking ring would not fit my tool and had to use my old ring. Seems like they made the teeth on the locking ring too small as I have the correct tool. The guys at the bike shop had the same problem and have all the Park tools.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shimano Ultegra CS-6500 9-speed Cassette, 12-27, June 4, 2010
Went on very easy and works like a charm as would be expected for the higher end Shimano products. A note for those who learn things visually - if you have not changed a cassette before the written instructions will frustrate you. There are many very good YouTube-like demo films on line that will visually walk you through the process.

5.0 out of 5 stars 9% is not small, April 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Going from a 12T to 11T rear, you notice the difference.

Cassette was a breeze to install. Shifting is accurate, fast, and silent if you let up the pressure slightly as you go.

This went on a training bike with training wheels (Mavic CXP33), so no report on the liveliness of the wheel with less mass (not sure I'd even notice it, really); it was an inexpensive way to increase my wattage/interval intensity without pedaling hyperfast. Certainly cheaper than replacing the bike :)

I notice my saddle more with this gearing, the extra intensity of a session on rollers (I train indoors, daily) brings saddle pain to a higher level (for me, at least). Thus, a $70 purchase is turning into a $200 one :)

Pleased with the cassette, did the right things for the right reasons for the right cost, and you can replace it yourself (buy the Park cassette tool for $9, and use a pair of big channel-locks with cloth such as a washcloth in the jaws to hold the old cassette on the 17T ring, gently, you don't need a chainwhip).

5.0 out of 5 stars 9 speed is still king, April 17, 2011

This review is from: Shimano CS-6500 Ultegra Bicycle Cassette (9-Speed) (Sports)
I've always had issues with my 10 speed components, but never with my 9 speed stuff. So when I decided to do a new bike build (Surly Cross Check), I decided to go back to 9 speed. I'm extremely happy with that decision! The bike rocks, and the 9 speed cassette and 9 speed Dura Ace chain are 100% precise, smooth and strong, even with a 10 speed Dura Ace crankset. I installed friction shifters and I've never had a problem shifting or staying in gear. 9 speed cassettes and chains last longer and are cheaper, so how can you go wrong? Now the problem I have is that I'm thinking of going back to 9 speed on my other lighter bike. Friction shifters are loads of fun, so I would just use the 10 speed brifters as brakes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reliable and Durable Cassette, February 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I've always had Ultegra components and found them to be reliable and durable. I added this 11-23T for my new TT bike setup. I raced it last weekend without issue. Now I can flip in my 12-25 for hilly courses and use this 11-23T for the flats. Still spinning away with an 8-year old race bike, all original parts + one new cassette!

I cannot compare this to Dura Ace, but I've never had a problem with Ultegra and cannot seem to wear any Ultegra parts out!! I ride 5K to 7K miles per year.

Bike shifts better than new now - great cassette. You should buy a new chain too if your chain isn't pretty new.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice to have the extra gears for climbing mountains, July 2, 2011

Switched from an 11/23 to a 12/27 after leaving the flatlands of Nebraska and moving to the mountains of Washington. Best decision to try this first before going from a standard crank to a compact crank. Cassette is usually cheaper and gets you more low gears. You'll have to do some slight adjustments and need special tools for replacing if you DIY.
