Product Description

For their Dyna-Sys 10-speed system, Shimano added another cog to their venerable XT level cassette. So like the previous 9-speed versions, the CS-M771-10 XT Cassette has the same Hyperglide tooth and ramp shapes to help the chain move effortlessly across its range. The XT 10-Speed Cassette uses plated steel cogs for superior durability, but that doesn't mean that it weighs a ton. The largest six cogs are minimal in design and are pinned to two lightweight alloy spiders -- three cogs for each spider. The four smallest cogs go on separately, and the whole batch is secured with a sleek alloy lockring. This cassette is compatible with Shimano's Dyna-Sys 10-Speed shifter and rear derailleur. The Shimano CS-M771-10 XT Cassette is available with three different cog options -- 11/32t, 11/34t, and 11/36t. The cogs are configured as follows:11/32: 11-12-14-16-18-20-22-25-28-3211/34: 11-13-15-17-19-21-23-26-30-3411/36: 11-13-15-17-19-21-24-28-32-36

I wanted to get a lower gear on my time-trial bike for those occasional hills, so I switched out the rear derailleur for this 11-34 10-speed. I'm used to 9-speed cassettes, but that extra gear in-between is handy for keeping my RPM's steady. Very quick and precise shifts. As I'm getting older, I find the lower gears a nice break for my legs! My daughter thinks I'm a wimp, but I'm 40 years older than her and can still beat her on a hill climb.

The instructions diagram shows a "lock ring spacer" that is not included BUT it is not needed.
Appears they did not change the directions when they made the 10 speed cassettes.
A quick web search confirms this; so now that you know about the non-existent spacer you can save yourself the anxiety ignorance provided me at first.

Installation is very easy as all but one gear is on a spider or has built in spacer.
The gears will only slide on the freewheel cog one way; but the black spacer needs to avoid the 'wide' grove area to seat strongest.
I also noticed from the gear markings that in order to make this cassette an 11-36 model one can just order the first spider that holds three gears - all of the other parts are identical otherwise.

One other note: during my web research for the 'missing' spacer I found that a common problem using these cassettes with Mavic hubs is that you apparently need 2 spacers on the inside of the freewheel before the first spider is installed.
Mavic sells these spacers ? I do not know as I used M756-LA Shimano hub for my build.

I have been using xt cassettes for the past 17 years. I have raced and done my regular trail rides on them and these cogs have not disappointed me ever. Now that I have jumped on to the 10 speed band wagon, it is just logical that I get an xt cogset. During my first two rides on it, the familiar and flawless shifting greeted me. I thought I was still on my xt 9 speed but the shift to the 36 cog pleasantly jolted me to reality! Awesome piece of Shimano technology.

I had to finally give up on the $300 casettes as I kept breaking gears during races. While this XT cassette is definitely heavier than cassettes that cost 3x more, I haven't bent or broken a cog or a tooth. I'd rather carry a few extra ounces of weight that try to finish a race missing my go to gears.

I've had two of the 11-32 version, and they have both failed - one after 1.5 years, one after just 5 months. They've failed in exactly the same way - a pair of cogs breaks free from the spider. The rivets used to attach them to the spider arm simply tear out of the spider arms, rendering the pair of cogs useless. You can shift to the cogs above or below this pair and sort of keep riding, but the broken pair can interfere with chain seating on the small cog below them, so you've effectively lost 3 of 10.

I'm not easy on my bikes - I weigh 200 lbs and I ride 365, including steep gravel road hills, and I do some cyclocross racing with the bike these were on.

However, I do maintain my bikes well, and two failures exactly alike says faulty design.

I'm petitioning Shimano for a free (superior) replacement or a refund.

I purchased this cassette to go from a 3x10 to a 1x10 and it worked perfectly. With this type of setup I took out one of the center cogs in order to put on a 42T cog on the end. With this setup I can currently climb most hills. While I have the 42T cog on the rear I rarely use it as the 36T gives me most of the efficiency that I need to climb. I'm using a 34T crankset in the front.

For those curious about going to 1x10 and are hesitant if you can still do all mountain, most of my rides are between 6-20 miles and I climb anywhere from 1,000-4,000 feet of elevation gain. From a recent uphill segment I've ridden an average of a 14% grade over the course of .5 miles. The range goes between 5% and 30%.

It's important to note this as the SLX and lower models do not offer the option to remove one of the middle cogs in order to put on the higher cog. So grab the XT if this is the setup that you're going for.

Half as light as my shimano HG cassette. Shifts and glides beautifully, The XT lineup is always worth the extra money.

Does what a cassette is supposed to do. It shifts well. I'm no weight weenie, but I am plenty pleased with how light this cassette is. I have not had it long enough to comment on durability.
