I have the Shimano Alfine dynamo hub on my Civia Hyland bike. It works well and is capable of providing enough current to give plenty of light with the proper choice of headlight. I like the convenience of not having to worry about carrying fresh batteries or making sure a rechargeable battery has enough charge.

Performance is dependent on the headlight you choose. The brightest Dynamo headlights available include the following ones: All are LED dynamo headlights.

Supernova E3 Triple
Supernova E3 Pro
Schmidt Edelux
Busch & Muller IQ Cyo
Light On Dynamo Light

All of these have a "Standlight" function which keeps the light shining for some time after stopping, a safety feature. All of them also have a connector on the headlight to run a dynamo taillight too.

I bought this hub so I can charge my phone and camera while riding my bicycle. I got it installed at my local bike shop for $25 because they were able to re use my spokes. I think it's about $45 if they cant. I can't feel any change in resistance from my non dynamo hub. I love the benefit of being able to charge my electronics while I ride, I can run applications on my phone and the battery is still full after my ride to work. It can also be used for lighting, but I haven't got that set up yet. This hub is for 32 spoke disc brakes.

This hub works very well and is a bargain at the price. But it is NOT durable. I am on my second hub and it just failed. The first was replaced under warranty, each hub lasted about 2500 miles. The hub is still generating, but it becomes extremely rough and noisy. I can feel vibration in the handlebars!

Powerful enough to run both my front and rear (Basta) lights (I still take a back-up). You should know however is that the hub works well but robs power from your bike so you may not coast as long, as far, or as fast as you normally do. I guess you should expect a little drag but nothing you can't get use to.
