I've used the "29er specific" hub for several builds, 29er geared and SS and Fatbike too and I'm very impressed. It's not super lightweight but not a tank. It's very durable and I wouldn't hesitate to build a wheel for my Clydesdale buddy with it. The bearing are smooth and adjustable. The steel free hub body won't get chewed up by the cassette or even by a single cog if you go for single speed. As a bonus, shimano closed cam skewers are the best out there, no bling but they hold better than anything except a DT Swiss RWS skewer and that's saying a lot.

These hubs come in a 16 point (2011) and 32 point (2012) engaging freehub body. The one I got is 16 point, a very solid 16 point but it would have been nice to get the 32 point version. Apparently there is no way to tell as the model numbers are exactly the same. So you don't know until you get it. Besides that, the bearings are butter smooth and the freehub is stout and a bit louder than I've come to expect from Shimano which is not a bad thing. Solid hub for dirt cheap.

This hub is last years high grade deore hub. I laced it to my sawyer to run singlespeed and the sound of the cassette body is soid and robust. I have had only one op so far out of it but no disconect. Best hub for the price!
