This is a great set of trigger shifters for upgrading the old twist type shifters on your 21 speed (3 x 7) bike. Highly recommend this. HOWEVER - at the point when I'm posting this feedback, the Amazon posting does not make it clear that this set of shifters includes a new set of cables, all in the box with the shifters. I was misled in to purchasing an extra set of cables because of the 'frequently bought with...' recommendations on Amazon. Save the extra $8 and skip the extra set of cables.

I've used these shifters on 2 of my bikes for about 4 years, and my wife has them on her bike. They work great. The product that shipped was the newer model, and doesn't match the product image on Amazon (as of 6/26/11). Both the older and newer models function exactly the same, as far as I can tell. The newer one just looks nicer.

The 'grip shift' shifters on a friends bike fell apart, and needed to be replaced. I recommended these to him, and purchased them on Amazon for him.

I installed them when they arrived, and I had an issue with the right-hand shifter. When using the lower shift lever (to down-shift the rear), the lever wouldn't return on it's own until I'd up-shift (use the upper lever). I figured there must have been something gumming up the inside, or the return spring didn't have enough tension.

I was just about to return the item, but I figured I'd at least try to resolve the problem. I didn't spot anything wrong, and didn't really want to douse it with degreaser right out of the box, but I did put a little bit of oil in there to try to loosen it up. After going up and down all the gears for several minutes, the lower lever finally started to return on it's own exactly as it's supposed to. I'm not entirely sure if it was the oil that did it, or the problem just resolved itself with repetitive use. Either way, it's working great on his bike now.

I'll try to remember to get a photo of the newer-style shifters, and post them up here soon, so that you all can see exactly what it is you're buying.

Edit:
I added an image that compares the looks of the Old and New styles side-by-side. Click the "See Customer Image" on the product page.

This is the "2 finger" short brake handle set, which cannot be adjusted for cantilever brakes. Tried to order the EF51 set with (4 finger grip) Cantilever brake compatibility. This is NOT this set. There exist EF51 4 finger sets out there, but one cannot easily tell how to order them from Amazon.

If you need guaranteed Cantilever brake compatibility, then order the EF65. Costs a little more, but will definitely work.

These shifters perform well. I especially liked how responsive the shifters and brake levers are. Lastly, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the product came with shifter/brake cables, as well as housing.

When I decided to mod my new bike (an Electra Townie 21 black) I felt the need for new shifters. Mine had large and ugly twist shifters. These are relatively easy to install, BUT do not come with instructions. You can however find a walkthrough online at http://si.shimano.com/#categories/56 It's also important to note that my handlebars (Velo Orange Porteur) were a little too wide for these to fit on without some bending. And one more thing, before removing your old shifters, make sure that your front and rear derailleurs are set in the lowest gear (smallest-front, largest-rear), it will make your life much easier.

This is a complete kit to replace everything related to your brakes and shifters.

* Left and right Shifter/Brakes
* Two brake cables with housing and metal ferrules and 2 crimp ends
* Two shift cables already attached to units (see pics) and 2 crimp ends
* Shift cable housing pre-cut with plastic ferrules

Note: You will need a bike cable cutter or a dremel so you don't crush the cable.

21.5" Giant MTB with old SRAM grip shifts; F/R shimano derailleurs

I came up 2-3" short on the shift cable using their pre-cut versions. I had to use a dremel to cut one of them, reuse an old section, and reuse old metal ferrules for the shift cable. The included metal ferrules seemed to be only for the brake cable because they felt loose. I have about 18' of left over brake cable housing. I have no idea why there is that much brake cable included. If your bike is smaller than 21.5" this may work without buying or reusing old parts.

Once installed, it worked great and is very smooth. Glad I opted for this over just putting up with new grip shifters.

Needed parts for 21.5" bike or bigger:

* Up to 1' or more of shift housing (SIS) (No you can't use the extra brake cable)
* Metal ferrules for the shift housing; the included ones seemed to be only for the brake cable. Felt way too loose.

I have the version like the photo, with the older gear indicators. They have very pleasant long 4 finger levers. The shifters have been perfectly reliable for several years of road and offroad use. The shifters are not picky about which derailers you use, of course as long as your components match (if SRAM, must be Shimano compatible). The levers work as shipped, with v-brakes, and some caliper brakes since they have the nice long levers. There is a plastic tab you can break out, which will make them work with old style cantilevers. Great for a replacement part or budget buyer who values function over hype.
