4.0 out of 5 stars Generally solid if they are what you are looking for.....
I agree with a couple of other reviews. These are called dual use and it says you don't need to clip in. This is true. I agree that it is not as comfortable to ride when you aren't clipped in (I actually use a softer shoe when I don't clip in and I'm just running a quick errand). These are heavy but I don't notice that on my mountain bike.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bulletproof but weight of a tank
Convenient to have options of riding clipped in or not, although if you aren't clipped in the pedal surface of this pedal isn't exactly conducive to riding comfortably for very long, IMO.

The pedals work well, but they sure are heavy. I'm not one who worries much about weight, but put two of these on your bike and it is noticeable.

I like being able to clip in on both sides so I can just step on my pedals and go and if you are like me then this is probably for you. If you don't mind making sure the pedal is on the proper side then you might be happier with a different pedal.

I find it MUCH easier to unclip by turning my heel in and have to adjust the pedals nearly as loose as possible.

I've tried lots of pedals and I've finally come to the conclusion that if you aren't going to clip in, you're better off going with a lighter pedal (like Wellgo) that is flat and has sufficient surface area for your shoe to rest on. If you are going to clip in... then best to do without the platform and save yourself the weight. If you want the option of clipping in or not, you'll pay for it weight wise.

Shimano makes another pedal that has the SPD option on one side and non-SPD on the other. Although it is also heavy, I prefer it to the PD-M424 because it has a larger flat surface for your shoe on the non-SPD side.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for easing into cleats!, February 24, 2012

I bought these as my first pair of cleat pedals. At first, I used them with regular, aggressive-treaded sneakers (adidas brand)and had no slippage on my rides. I later upgraded to biking shoes and started with cleats. I set the tension of the pedals to the lowest as they would go and found no issues getting out of them when necessary.

A major benefit of cleats is when you jump anything. When clipped in, I can jump my entire bike over a log now instead of popping the front tire and "bumping" over. Another benefit I've found is you have more control and power in your movements; you are more "connected". But if you decide you don't like the feeling of clips, then just wear some aggressive tread shoes and they are like regular pedals.

I'm guessing these would not be great with dress shoes or converse-type treads as they don't have large teeth on the non-clip part of the pedal.

I have been using this peddle for more than 4 years now, riding 5 days a week on two different bikes. It is reliable, forgiving and works as expected. I highly recommend this peddle for everyday commute or daily riding. I have riding it with clip shoes and without. Fully expect to buy another pair once I wear them out.

These are my first shimano bought clip in pedals and they really are great. They easily clip in, and i also use regular shoes when i go out with just friends. Installation was pretty easy, basic tools where used. I did fall a few times just getting used to the clips, but after some time i got used to it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Still getting used to them, September 4, 2011

These are my first pair of clipless pedals, and they are taking some getting used to. The pedal locks onto the cleat VERY securely. I wasn't able to get my foot out of the binding until I had already fallen over, a few times. Once I loosened the binding from it's factory setting though it's much easier to get in and out of them. The pedals seem to be very well made and work just like they are supposed to. The binding does sit above the plastic pedal a bit and makes them much more slippery than regular platform pedals, especially when your shoes are wet.

All in all, these pedals are what they are supposed to be. Not really a platform pedal, and not really a clipless pedal, but if you really want to have both without switching back-and-forth between different pedals they are a good option. I haven't abused them a whole lot yet, but the plastic pedal appears to be very tough. For the extra money and weight I don't see any reason to get the pedals with the metal cage.

These are my first clipless pedals ever, and I am very satisfied with them. They are easy to learn to use, and simple to adjust. Great product!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great pedals for trail use or general multi-use, February 15, 2011
This review is from: Shimano PD-M424 SPD Dual Platform Pedal (Sports)
My first experience with these pedals were on a mountain bike from about 2002 to 2008. I picked them up from my local bike store for about $60 and they survived serious punishment on the trails. I smacked them into rocks, roots, logs, you name it and they never failed me. At the end, the bearings on one side were feeling a little loose, but that's to be expected after 5 years of abuse and zero maintenance.

I ended up selling these with my old mountain bike, but I immediately regretted the decision and picked up a new set. I'm now using these on my road/commuter bike that I use for a daily commuter and for longer rides on the weekends. They're great for just hopping on a riding to the store in normal shoes, but you can feel the clip mechanism beneath your sole. It's plenty comfortable for rides under 5 miles. For longer rides, the clipless mechanism works great with an adjustable tension screw to dial in how tight you want the binding to be.

Excellent pedals for the price if you need something that is multi-use. If you only need clipless, a dedicated XT pedal for another $20 is the best way to go.

Great pedals! They are solid right out of the box and give me the extra support if my clip comes out, I can continue to ride.

3.0 out of 5 stars Acceptable multi-purpose pedals, but there's better out there, May 7, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Shimano PD-M424 SPD Dual Platform Pedal (Sports)
These are decent pedals. I use them on my Felt Q620 MTB so I can lock in on for more serious rides, yet have the flexibility to just jump on for a ride around the block with my kids wearing whatever shoes I happen to have on. But, like all things designed to do two things, it does neither of them well. It's a little difficult to lock my cleats into and out of the pedal. Not impossible, just not as responsive as other pedals I've had. Also, when wearing regular non-cycling shoes, it can be uncomfortable to ride for too long on these pedals. The bracket that holds the cleat on each side sits slightly above the black cage which tends to both add pressure to the bottom of my foot and push my foot off the pedal. OK for quick rides around the block with the kids, but not much more.

Would I buy these particular pedals again? No. But, I don't plan to replace them either.
