5.0 out of 5 stars Super premium SPD pedals - got the matching SM-SH51/56 cleats, too
I love em! Paid $185 in the shop at the Y in Tahoe and got the matching SM-SH51/56 cleats put on my shoes. They just fasten sooooooo smoothly that they are one of life's little joys and safety fixes to me that you may want to entertain doing. I'm glad I upgraded, and wish I had them for all my bikes. 2.0 out of 5 stars Beware! Could be a bad lot out there.
I ordered a set of these 2 weeks ago for my commuter bike and on the first ride the right pedal separated from the spindle. Amazon sent me a replacement set and on the first ride with those the same thing happened again - right pedal came off leaving just a greasy spindle attached to the crank. I did nothing to adjust or modify the pedals - just took them out of the box...

One thing... pedals only install with a larger 8mm allen wrench I believe, so buy that tool when you get them if you plan on moving them around at all. They do not accept a standard pedal wrench, so that's out, but an allen's easier to carry than a pedal wrench. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Who needs XTR?, April 9, 2011

I had XTR/900 series pedals on two of my bikes and decided to put them on the third so as to have the same cleats for three bikes/two pairs of shoes. However, nobody was offering deep enough discounts on XTR,so I decided to go with XT. I made a similar move from Dura-Ace to Ultegra a while back with good results. Well, the verdict is in: XT pedals are just as good as XTR. Function is the same. No difference clipping in or releasing. Tension adjustment is the same. Visually, you can't tell them apart. And as for weight, I had an XT pedal in one hand and an XTR in the other, and if there's a difference, it's so minor as to be almost undetectable. So, there it is: buy XT, get a pedal that's as good as XTR, and save yourself a hundred bucks in the bargain. By the way, for the road bikers out there, dual-entry pedals are a real advantage in urban riding: when the light changes or it's your turn to go at an intersection, there's no fooling around, looking down and trying to clip in. Just step down and hit it!

XTs are Excellent. I have used 520s and thought they were junk and now I know they were.
I took the XTs out of the box and in 5 mins had them on the bike with no adjustments needed. They work perfectly, no unecessary play and the right amount of tension. I even saved on the weight by upgrading.
These are worth every cent.

5.0 out of 5 stars perfect pedal, February 15, 2010

I got these to replace a set of M520 pedals that never seemed to work right. The XT pedals work perfectly. It took a while to get them adjusted properly. I guess everyone has a different preference on how tight they would like them to be. They have the perfect amount of float withoult making you feel like you're going to "fall off the pedal" (like my old pedals did). They're still easy to get in and out of, and no matter what you ride through, (ie. dirt, water, even thick mud)they work flawlessly.

Amazon sent me a replacement set and on the first ride with those the same thing happened again - right pedal came off leaving just a greasy spindle attached to the crank. I did nothing to adjust or modify the pedals - just took them out of the box and screwed onto my cranks. I'm pretty sure the spindle sheared off at the nut that holds the pedal on both times. Luckily I was just riding on flat pavement when these failed so no crash occurred - had I used these on my mountain bike, I might have been seriously injured. Other than that, I really liked the pedals, so I took a refund and splashed out for XTRs this time. Hopefully it was just a bad lot - but be careful with these!

My wife and I put these on our Trek 7.5's. We ride 50/50 trail and road. Nice pedal all the way around. Love being able to click in on either side. High Quality!

After receiving my PD-M770 Deore XT pedals I was eager to get my first taste of clipped in biking. I'd been training for my first century and felt it was time to get more out of the energy I was exerting over long rides. The variety of tension settings paired with using the Shimano cleats that allowed multiple angles of release made the learning curve very short. On my 4th ride I experienced the right pedal popping right off the spindle. I brought them to my local Shimano dealer in Chicago, Village Cycle who took the time to try to disassemble the pedal. In the end, though I appreciate my local shop's customer service, there was no need. I got a call that when calling Shimano they said they have had a few of these same problems with this model. Their solution was to send off a new pair of the newer model. I should have them in 3 days which is very reasonable and although I might recommend others consider another Shimano model I have to give them high marks for backing up their product. Amazon did a good job of delivering the product and it was easier to go through my shop than return them to Amazon, so no problem either way.

after about 2 months and 100 miles of light riding (it's on a pampered city road bike), the right pedal completely fell off the spindle! can't fix it and can't get a refund. i'm going to try to send it in for warranty repair, but in the meantime, i'm going to try the XTRs. have to say i was not impressed with the build quality out of the box either. would NOT buy again!

I had exactly the same experience as someone earlier, while riding in the first mile or so of a ride, the right pedal simply worked its way off the spindle and just popped off. I could not get it to reseat so that was the end of that ride. Luckily it was only a fire road and nothing dangerous, but not a good thing. Sucks because I had a pair of XTR pedals that I've had for 10 years with no problems whatsoever.

I'm not a fan of the allen wrench installation either, I would prefer to install using a pedal wrench. These are going back and I am trying out the Time ATACs.
