This review is from: The Shimmershine Queens (Hardcover)
This book is a good book and I think everyone that has big dreams for the future should read it. If you don't have big dreams or something that you want to strive for than you can't really relate to this book. I think this book is so good because it is one of those books that make you laugh, cry, and upset. This book is really good and this book also flicks a switch in people that makes them want to do good in life.

300 word paragraph by Dominic Black,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Shimmershine Queens (Paperstar) (Mass Market Paperback)
The Shimmershine Queens is a good book. I would want to recommend this book to all of the other kids out there. I want to recommend this book because it is a good book. I also want to recommend this book because it talks about how Cousin Seatta was in slavery and a girl named Angie does a school play. She has a conflict at home and it is her father won't come visit her and she thinks he won't come to the play. She decided to steal some things from the Woolsworth store, she stole some lipstick and bought candy. She did that because she was mad at her dad. She was mad at her dad because of the conflict at home. This book has some curse words in it so don't let little kids read this book. It is still a good book though. Most of the kids liked the book for the curse words. Some just thought it was a good book. I was one of the kids who just thought it was a good book. I like this book because it is very interesting. I hope some other people can read this book. I think they will like it.If you think it is a bad book because of the curse words, it is not it is a good book. Trust me it is not bad by the curse words. So either check it out at the library or any place. I just want you to read the book. You'll like it. I want you to write about it, too. You go to amazon.com go to books. Type in The Shimmershine Queens. Go to write your own reveiw. Then, go to kids under thirteen if your a kid and your there.

I think this a really well written story. It is very moving and emotional. This book contains lots of slang, so it was very easy to fallow along. This book is about a girl named Angie. She dreams of going big and buying her mom a big house. Until the day she meets her Cousin Seatta. She tells her to achive her dreams by telling herabout her african beauty, her heritage of slaves, on top of all the shimmershine feeling. Do you really want to figure out what happens next go ahead and read it!!!!

The Shimmershine Queens,
This review is from: The Shimmershine Queens (Paperstar) (Mass Market Paperback)
There are many little things in life that can bring you down. But just think about how the slaves felt about being brought to America and having to work on plantations. If you think about it we have it a lot better than them. The Shimmershine Queens is about a girl named Angie and her struggle with a depressed mom and a dad that is no where to be seen. But her life changes in an instant when a drama class starts at her school and Angie's mom says she can join with her friend Michelle. Unfortunately things spiral back down when Angie gets in a fight with Charlene. Eventually Charlene and Angie become friends. Angie gets in the play at her school and is the main character but is extremely shy. After a little bit she breaks out of her shell and starts to like the idea of her being the main character of the play. When Angie finds out that her mom is secretly talking to her dad she becomes really excited and asks her mom if she can ask her dad if he will come and see the play. Angie changes a lot and is feeling down in the dumps and is scared that her dad won't come to the play. The real question is will he leave and leave Angie's family all alone again. To find out you have to read the book. The audience of The Shimmershine Queens is 8-10 years old and teenagers. The reason why it has two different audiences is because there is language that is inappropriate for little kids. But kids will also learn about the history of our country and what it was like to be a slave. The genre of this book is realistic fiction. I think this because all of the things that happen in this book could happen in real life. I think The Shimmershine Queens has some similarities with the movie Mean Girls because in Mean Girls Katie and her class mates fight and in The Shimmershine Queens Angie and her classmates fight. Also Angie is shy and breaks out of her shell. Mean Girls Katie breaks out of her shell too. Two parts I liked about The Shimmershine Queens is that it was written realistically by using dialect to make it seem like the characters were really talking. I also liked that it taught me about the way slaves lived in our country. Two things I didn't like were the fact that the dialect sometimes made it hard to understand. Another is that it might be a little violent for some readers under the age of thirteen. Ultimately I liked this book because it opened me to a lot of new things. I think any one in middle school will like this book. It is great and one of my favorites.

A Kid's Review

In chapter one I like how the story began. What I liked was that Angie had made an made up an poem. The poem was talking about the elevator in thee building. It went "One Two Three Four Five Six Seven Eight peep around the corner see who's there. I just thinks it's a really great poem but that's not the whole poem . I liked how her and Michelle spoke AAL in the story. That's what I liked in chapter one.

Personally, I am a big advocate of LGBT Issues and like when art tackles the issues of race and sexual orientation, but when the main character "ended up" being a Lesbian at the end of the book with ABSOLUTELY NO HINTS IN THE FIRST 75% OF THE BOOK, it showed that the author is completely oblivious to the Gay community and just sort of threw it in there.Leading up to the horrible ending, the book itself was a little silly, and I the dialogue was predictable and got old fast... really fast. |
