Comedic Anime With an Offensive Twist,
By
This review is from: Shin Chan: Season One, Part One (DVD)
Shin Chan is an anime in Japan for kids, however, the adapted series for America is far from it. Adult Swim and Funimation re-wrote the dialogue of the show to suit the viewers of Adult Swim. Cultural references are also changed to things Americans can relate to. This box set is the collection of the six "test" episodes as well as the sixteen episodes Adult Swim picked up to complete the full season. This dvd set is defidently a must buy if you do not offend easily.

This is a review of just the dvd disc itself. While Shinchan is silly and hilarious to watch, it did not include the japanese audio nor did it have subtitles as described.

To be a man you must have honor!,

I love, love, love this show! I used to watch the Japanese show when I was younger. Now that I'm older (in my twenties), I'm fairly certain that I would still like the original version, but this new adult swim version is so much more entertaining for me. It's hilariously offensive and definitely adult! It's a great show and much less offensive than South Park. Shin Chan rocks!

Twisted, Funny, & Badly Drawn!,

This review is from: Shin Chan: Season One, Part One (DVD)
I always watch the TV show whenever it's on [adult swim], & I'm really excited that a DVD of it is coming out. I haven't seen the original Japanese children's show, but I'd really like to. In my opinion, it's one of the most entertaining shows I've seen, no matter how badly drawn it is. I can't wait for the DVD.

Release Shin-chan in his original glory!,
By
This review is from: Shin Chan: Season One, Part One (DVD)
They should have released this DVD with the original Japanese uncut video and Japanese soundtracks. It is SO much funnier. I first started watching Shin-chan when I was stationed in Misawa, Japan 18 years ago and have been hooked on it ever since. I've enjoyed the Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball series--they are both uncut and have the original footage. Sure, some of this stuff may not be appropriate for children, but parents should have the responsibility to be aware of what their children are watching anyway. Release Shin-chan in his original form and put the entire season in one set instead of this part 1, part 2 stuff--what, are you trying to milk us for money? I hated to see when the Spongebob series started doing that...Don't change the cultural references, so what if some people don't get it--it's a good learning experience!

Please note that the one-star rating is for this DVD/product, NOT for the show itself. Shin-Chan deserves 5 stars, but this is a rather lackluster DVD release.
Other customers have complained about the lack of Japanese language (and I agree with them 100%), but my beef is the fact that there is no close-captioning or sub-titles! I LOVE this show and watched it whenever I could on Adult Swim. My hearing is not that good, and this show was presented with CC when it aired on Adult Swim. I laughed and laughed at the episodes and was excited when the DVDs came out. Yes, cultural references are Americanized, but this made it more accessible (and funny) to US audiences. Still, it would be nice to have had the original Japanese dialog with the subtitles to go along with it, with the option to have the English or Japanese dialog subtitled. I popped it in to watch and to my dismay, there's no subtitle option, nor does it have a closed-captioning track. How am I supposed to watch this? My hearing is poor enough that I do need to have some kind of captioning whenever I watch television, and I was SO disappointed to find out that I would not be able to enjoy these DVDs like I enjoyed them on Adult Swim. I had been planning to buy the rest of the series - but now, forget it. I'm so sad and disappointed that I can't enjoy this show anymore as it's no longer on Adult Swim. :(

Number One Funny Show! Number 10 DVD Rendering!,

This review is from: Shin Chan: Season One, Part One (DVD)
"Shin chan" is a hilarious, off-beat show that far surpasses anything done by South Park or anything else seen on Adult Swim or the Comedy Channel! It's rude, obnoxious, raucous, MOST inappropriate yet all without losing the basic innocence of a 5 year old boy. Can't beat that! Hurry up with Season 1, Part 2!!! If I have to I'll go on a pee strike!!! I like the magnificent blend of "American" humor with the Japanese backdrop. There are SO many Japanese references here that make me homesick for Japan!
The problems I have with the DVD itself are the lack of subtitles for the AS/FUNimation soundtrack and the absence of the original Japanese soundtrack with English translation. I know it's a totally different show, but I wouldn't mind having that! Heck, I wouldn't mind having a track with the original kid's version dubbed into English so my niece and nephews could watch it! I let them watch the first 5 minutes but my brother heard the dialogue and that was the end of that! My other problems is the censoring..."Shin chan" is rated TV-MA, same as "The Shield", one of the most violent, profanity-laden shows on cable; why is it being censored at all??? It's not like they're dropping the F-Bomb everywhere...and in a couple spots they censored Shin's "elephant" but not in others, WTF? Sometimes it seems like FUNimation was in a hurry to get this out to it's fans or wasn't sure who the audience was; IT'S RATED TV-MA!!! YOUR AUDIENCE IS ADULTS (more or less)!!! NO MORE CENSORING!!! The commentary was worthless. Very few people seem to understand the purpose of the commentary is to comment on the show, not on what you had for lunch or what your philosophy on life is. If you need an example of a great commentary, I refer you back to "the Shield". So, other than the lack of subtitles, the worthless commentary, and the censorship, this is a fantastic DVD! I still give it 5 stars!

This dubbing is flippin terrible!,
This review is from: Shin Chan: Season One, Part One (DVD)
Funimation should have left this alone. The original was sentimental and nostalgic, as well as crude and disfunctional. Shin Chan was a cute womanizing 5 year old with a severe learning disability. If you are a fan of the original Japanese show, stay clear of this garbage. On the other hand, if you like over the top crassness and cheap American pop culture references every other minute, enjoy.
Had a few tapes from the Hawaian TV subbed show, which were brilliant. Hope someone decides to sub the show and release it to DVD.

I love this show a lot. I couldn't wait for it to come out on DVD with The Adult Swim version. My roommate in college watched it all the time and quote it all the time. To be a man. You must have honor. [...]

Best anime comedy around,
By Mark Twain "Sam" (Florida, MO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Shin Chan: Season One, Part One (DVD)
From the voice acting and the, sort of, satirical animation style, to the clever, politically incorrect writing, shin chan is absolutely hilarious. The comedy focuses on ludicrous juxtapositions that revolve around a blend of American and Japanese every day life. It reminds me of humor from shows like Family guy, The Simpsons, and South Park, but Shin Chan does what they do in a slightly more tasteful and ''good-natured'' way (not that i'm saying this show isn't incredibly inappropriate and offensive). You don't even have to like anime, if you just like to laugh, watch this show!
