Don't get me wrong, Persefone makes great death metal music. This is another one of those bands I accidentally stumbled across. My standard practice when I hear of a new bands is to read reviews, and if it sounds like it could be up my alley, I'll search for the band's myspace page and listen to a couple of songs. Doing it that way, you can't lose.

Upon first listen, I was blown away. It was one of those rare 'wow'-inducing albums. So, the first chance I got, I downloaded the entire album from iTunes. This being said, Shin-Ken is not exactly what it sounds like by listening to one song on Myspace. Naturally, I was slightly disappointed.

The reasoning is, being that this album seems to be a concept album, there are a few too many instrumentals on the album, to a point they seemed to take over the second half of the album in particular. An instrumental or two placed in the middle or the end of an album as a change of pace is not necessesarily a bad thing, in my opinion. The only problem with Shin-Ken is that there are none short of 6 such instrumentals out of fourteen songs on the album. All of the 'book' songs seem like filler material in this light.

Get the album. There is some amazingly versatile death metal music on the album. One thing it has going for it is that all of the 'book' songs clock in at under 3:00, while the majority of the other songs are in the 5:00 range. You might be slightly disappointed, as I was, the feeling was mild. Focus on the icredible vocals and fast tempos and you'll have something in hand you'll listen to again and again.

Overall, I'll give Shin-Ken a 4.1/5, docked slightly for too many 'book' songs.

Persefone, for those who didn't know is from Andorra, a small country sandwiched between France and Spain.
