Disappointing but still useful, December 20, 2008
This review is from: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 The Official Strategy Guide (Mass Market Paperback)
To get to the point, this DoubleJump guide is loaded with errors that shouldn't be there. Most of them are minor annoyances, but some leave out or misreport critical information. For instance, the Persona skills listed for Teddie are 100% inaccurate and are obviously meant for Kanji. Even worse, some enemy data is just plain wrong. I was fighting a rare monster called Luxury Hand once, the guide says Light skills are effective, so I cast Hamaon. Guess what? Blocked. The mistakes aren't just confined to tables. In one paragraph, the guide claims that in Triangle Fusions, if two personas are at the same level, the one with the higher arcana takes precedence. This is blatantly wrong, as it's actually the persona with the *lower* arcana that takes precedence.
While the more minor errors such as typos aren't as important, they're far more numerous and certainly aren't irrelevant. I'd honestly bet that more than half of the pages have one or more typos, doubled paragraphs, etc. Quite a nuisance.
However, despite all my complaints, I don't really regret buying the guide. It's extremely useful as a reference when you simply want to know an enemy's weakness, how to complete a quest, how to open certain doors in dungeons, how to respond in S. Link events, and a lot more. It's a whole lot more convenient to simply have a small book at your side rather than digging online for the info. And hey, it looks pretty snazzy, too.
In the end, I recommend a purchase only if you love Persona 4 and plan on spending many, many hours with the game, as I do, or if you simply enjoy using strategy guides. It's at least better than the typical slop Brady and Prima throw out, after all. Just be aware of the errors.

Almost perfect guide., August 13, 2009
This review is from: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 The Official Strategy Guide (Mass Market Paperback)
This is an excellent guide. It comes in a nice compact size (dvd case size, like most double jump guides), and can fit nicely into your dvd/game racks or shelves. But this is only a minor positive. It is a very detailed guide, which includes guides to maxing your social links, strategies, schedules, etc. Which is what you can come to expect from a double jump guide. The only main gripe I had about this guide is that I couldn't seem to find a good persona fusion chart in it, so I found myself getting up to check my computer for fusion charts (which is why I bought this guide, so I could stop reading a FAQ before doing any minor detail in the game, hence sitting on a computer through out playing the game). I also expected more from the guide like at least half a page dedicated to a persona, listing it's bio, fusion recipes to make the persona, strengths, weaknesses, etc like most good double jump guides. Apart from that it is worth the money, especially if you don't want to sit by a computer all day following social link maxing faqs.

Did what it needed to do, August 10, 2009
This review is from: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 The Official Strategy Guide (Mass Market Paperback)
I read alot of reviews before actually purchasing the product. there were alot of complaints about typos and other spelling mistakes. After receiving my copy of the guide i have to say that the complaints about the grammar and spelling are uncalled for. There are instances in which paragraphs are repeated but other than that the guide itself does everything it is supposed to. It properly shows you enemy weaknesses, What s.links are available each day, all of the quests and how to complete them, the different persona's that are obtainable, It also keeps the story spoiler free until the moment you discover the true/normal ending. The guide helped me balance my time to achieve max social link with the other characters as well as gave me an idea of how strong i needed to be per boss fight. If you just need a general idea about the game, the shadow weaknesses, how to solve all the quests and are just looking to see all the little hidden easter eggs. Then i would definetly recommend getting this guide.
