A MUST FOR KINKS FANS!!!!!!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Shindig Presents [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Although it is old, black and white, and some of the tunes are sang to a backing track, it is worth it to own. Early live versions of 'You Really Got Me', 'All Day & All The Night' and 'See My Friends' tell us how influential the Kinks were to Rock n Roll. This band was just as cool and just as dangerous as the Rolling Stones, The Who, and even The Beatles. They are one of the most (if not the most) under-rated bands in the short history of Rock n Roll. Long live Ray & Dave Davies!!!

Leave it to Rhino to unearth these rare performances of the Kinks on Shindig. The visual quality varies from acceptable to good, but the sound is consistently outstanding, given the source material. Here we get the see the Kinks in their heyday, with many young girls in the audience screaming and clapping along. The songs breeze by in quick succession, with 10 tunes clocking in at a mere 30 minutes. However, given the rarity of sixties footage of the Kinks, this video is well worth owning.

The Kinks are classics! It brings me back 30some years! Their music is as good today as it was then! Watching my 14 year old daughter fall in love with Dave Davies, as I had, was a real thrill!

Kompelling Kinks in Klassic black and white,

Aahh, 60's television - when the world was in black and white. Shindig was a groundbreaking show - an entire half hour of prime time television devoted to real rock and soul. Some of the performances were live, some were lip-synched, but it hardly matters. This tape gives us all a chance to see the Kinks in their early hitmaking years. "You Really Got Me" and "All Day and All of the Night" are both live performances, exciting, hard driving rock and roll, featuring Dave Davies' wild guitar solos. Look at Dave here - 17 years old, grinning like a mad man, unleashing all that pent up fury! Some songs feature live vocals over the original studio recordings ("See My Friends", "I Gotta Move" - Ray's voice cracks in the middle of the latter). It's easy to forget how beautifully the Davies brothers harmonized until you hear them singing together on "See My Friends". Dave is also featured up front on a couple songs, an unfortunately truncated "I'm a Lover, Not a Fighter", and the show closer "Long Tall Shorty". Was Ray Davies ever really this young? There's also a few bits with the shows host and producer, Jimmy O'Neil and Jack Good that are fun to see all these years later. Definately a must-own video for all Kinks or rock and roll fans!

An excellent video to own. If your only knowledge of the Kinks is "You Really Got Me," you need to see this tape! So much good music like "Set Me Free," "I Gotta Move," and "It's All Right," coupled with Shindig's excellent presentation and staging will make you a new Kinks fan!
