All aboard for SHINE!, the next stop on my poetic journey to encourage you to find your own shine. After many of my performances while on tour with my first book, Seasons of Her, many of you shared with me that hearing the voice of the poet who wrote the poems really allowed you to feel the emotion behind each word, each syllable, each sigh and each intonation. During the performances, you discovered that you received the words in person in a way that was distinctively different from the experience of reading the poetry with your own internal voice. You reported that both experiences -- reading and hearing the words -- gave you something unique and equally enjoyable. You found that you could not choose one medium over the other. You wanted both! It seemed that you reveled in the written word and the ability to linger over the lines, and at the same time you longed for the poet's voice to complete the sensory circle. Thus, SHINE! was born, the perfect blend of the written and spoken word.

I hope and trust that through this multimedia book you will tap into that essential spark of greatness within you. More About the Author

Tonya M. Evans-Walls, Esq., is the managing attorney of a Philadelphia-based law firm that concentrates in the areas of entertainment law (literary, music and film), intellectual property (copyright and trademark), estate planning, and municipal finance. She is the co-chair of the Pennsylvania Bar Association Sports, Entertainment and Art Law Committee, and an adjunct professor at York College of Pennsylvania. She is also a nationally recognized speaker who presents to various audiences regularly on publishing and intellectual property law and estate planning issues.

Tonya is also a performance poet and writer, and the author of numerous books, including Copyright Companion for Writers, Literary Law Guide for Authors: Copyright, Trademark, and Contracts in Plain Language, Seasons of Her and SHINE! Forthcoming titles include Contracts Companion for Writers and And Then One Day She Knew. Her short story, Not Tonight appears in an anthology titled Proverbs for the People, published by Kensington.

Tonya attended Northwestern University on a four-year tennis scholarship, and thereafter she competed on the women's professional tennis circuit and played most notably in the US Open, Virginia Slims of Philadelphia, and Lipton in 1993. Thereafter, she attended Howard University on an academic scholarship, graduated with honors, and served as Editor-in-Chief of the Howard Law Journal.

Tonya now lives in Philadelphia with her husband, O. Russel Walls, III, and is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Shine provided me with the opportunity to reflect on my personal resilence. With pieces such as "I Will Tell Myself" and "Find Your Own Shine", I remembered a strength and determination that can only come from within. As I listened to Tonya Marie's words, both in the written form and on the accompanying CD, I was reminded that I am not alone in experiencing the trials and tribulations that Life can sometimes bring. I was also reminded that with each breathe and through careful reflection we can overcome these life experiences and "begin again" (taken from "A Villager Speaks"). I thoroughly enjoyed Shine and have found myself buying it for gifts, referring to it in the classroom, and using it as a teaching and therapeutic tool. I believe that Tonya Marie has a beautiful and powerful voice that soothes, heals, and inspires you to regain your life and be true to your real self. In other words, just as Tonya Marie as recommended, her work inspires and gives you the courage to "Shine".

This is not your ordinary spoken word material. Tonya Marie Evans along with her co-horts Stephanie Renee and Damon "Dizzy Fingers" Bennet brew up some seriously groovy tunes, with styles ranging from house to progressive soul to acid jazz. Tonya Marie's voice is smooth yet commanding and when coupled with Stephanie Renee's own phenomenal voice the result is truly wonderful. My favorite's are "I Will Tell Myself" the danceable, deep house track and "FYOS" a groovy acid jazz track worthy of recognition. This companion cd is truly worth a listen. Unlike most music today it is soulful, inspirational and enjoyable!!

Tonya Marie Evan's "Shine" poetry book with companion Cd may very well become the forerunner for the Spoken Word genre. This poetry book, alone, presents Tonya Marie Evans' honesty, and spirituality. The Cd fulfills the promise of "Finding Your Own Shine," as well exhibiting the smooth vocals of this wonderful new talent.

One track in particular is sure to become an instant hit with both inspirational and jazz radio---"Angry." In this particular cut, Ms. Evans displays her lyrical prowness with perfect elocution, musical savvy and a story of why, "Anger" had to go and what happens when Peace moves in.

For those who are not quite sure of what to make of this new phenomen, the "Spoken Word;" Tonya Marie Evans offers the perfect roadmap. Sit back and listen, "Shine" is balm for the soul and spirit.
