3.0 out of 5 stars Nice Selection, rough remastering
A German release with a selection of songs that is well tuned to the contemporary ear. Includes great numbers like Puttin' It On, You Oughta Be in Pictures, The Music Goes Round and Round, and Goin' Home, which makes it a nice piece despite a somewhat uneven remastering. I suspect these were remastered from period records rathern than directly off acetates or master...

I was born in the 40's, and never heard of the Boswell Sisters. After listening to our local "Oldies but Goodies' radio station 91.5 out of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, they played the Boswell Sisters. I just adored the harmonizing, and vocalizing. They outsing any and all of the singing sisters, Andrews, McQuire, etc. I play the record when home, and wake up singing the songs (in my mind). (No, I'm not obsessed with the Boswell Sisters),I am such a fan, and would like to read more about these beautiful sisters. I also bought two more of the cd's, but this album is the best of all their songs.

The Boswell Sisters were perhaps the only female trio with so much talent that they could take a song and sing it switching effortlessly back and forth from key change to key change and from one tempo to another. They were so good that they made it seem easy; but of course we know it's wasn't easy at all. They were gifted artists.

This CD has twenty excellent numbers recorded by The Boswell Sisters. I liked the opening "We're In The Money (The Gold Digger's Song)." They bob and sway and even swing brightly as they turn this number out with style. They sing it fast, and then listen for another verse that comes along much slower--and the key changes make "We're In The Money (The Gold Digger's Song)" even better! The arrangement with its brass and percussion works well.

"Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea" keeps their vocals squarely in the spotlight; and they never miss a note! "Forty-Second Street" begins with a quick musical flourish and when the sister act comes in they masterfully put their own stamp on this classic hit.

"Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries" has Bing Crosby and The Mills Brothers singing sweetly as the sisters do their usual vocal gymnastics; I predict that you will enjoy this number very much. "Life Is Just A Bowl Of Cherries" has a fine arrangement for the piano, too. "Shine On, Harvest Moon" is another favorite of one; the horns start the tune and set the mood as The Boswell Sisters turn out another excellent rendition of a classic ballad. "Shine On, Harvest Moon" impresses me a lot.

"You Oughta To In Pictures" again has The Boswell Sisters changing tempos and keys as they deliver this flawlessly; and they add some rarely heard lyrics on this track.

The liner notes don't give you much more than the song credits. Oh, well. However, I do have one complaint about this album. Although these tracks have been polished up digitally, the numbers still have considerable surface noise. I think they could have done a better job of remastering these songs.

Nevertheless, The Boswell Sisters do a great job on these songs; and the album is a must-have for fans of The Boswell Sisters. People who enjoy classic pop vocals with a twist of creativity will also enjoy this album; it's packed full of hits from one of the best sister acts of the entire twentieth century.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Boswell Sisters Are Swell!, October 13, 2011

I first heard this CD while at an antique mall. I was so intrigued with their singing that I asked the proprietors who they were playing. Since buying the CD, there's been nothing to change my mind about this album of hits. After perusing the various CD collections of thier songs, I felt that "Harvest Moon" was the single best anthology of their hits. You'll love their harmonies and unusual tempo changes during the course of the songs, which remains unique to this day. The Boswell sisters were the impetus and role model for the better-known Andrew Sisters and it's difficult to fathom why they're so little known today. This is a relaxing album that will soothe your frazzled nerves and take you back to a kinder, gentler time.

4.0 out of 5 stars not the Andrews Sisters, the other group, December 6, 2010

Before the Andrews Sisters, the Boswell Sisters were on the radio, singing with Bing Crosby (as the Andrewses would later do), recording their versions of "Dinah", "Shine On Harvest Moon", "When It's Sleepy Time Down South",to name just a few, and becoming extremely popular. The Andrews Sisters admitted completely to copying them, "so much we sounded like shrimp trawlers". The Boswells (from New Orleans) swing like no other group before or since (unless said group copies off an arrangement). Their tempo changes, their whole treatment of songs is unique and if close harmony pop is your thing you better check them out.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Boswell Sisters Cut Loose!, July 4, 2009

Great selection of Boswell Sisters Harmony! Nice packaging...

Trouble is, some of the material has not be "digitally cleaned"

So half the tracks have background scratchy noise... Guess thats

the price you pay for music that is 80 years old! Still, its fun

to hear their unique brand of harmony... Great for music historians...

Love the Boswell Sisters, but this wasn't as good a recording as the others. It's still worth the purchase price.
