Heard this power trio live at Bohemian Caverns in DC last weekend. In short, they were unique, powerful, proficient, mesmerizing. Think Coltrane, Garrison and Jones. Buy them. See them. No one else alive does it similar. No one else ever may have done it better.

If there is a better tenor-bass-drums combo out there, I haven't heard it.

Every note means something, and as intense as things can get, this trio never abdicates form and substance in the name of hip cliches and empty frenetic gestures.

Simply put, every track is singing and swinging.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perpetual Post Reviews Shine!, September 26, 2009

HOWARD MEGDAL: At the risk of being too self-referential, this is where differing perspectives of Perpetual Post really helps. While Akie clearly delineates the musical journey in Shine!, I was unable to follow the threads. Akie's got the background to do it- I do not.

AKIE BERMISS: I readily admit that a week ago I did not have the slightest clue who J.D. Allen was. I bought the album purely on the strength of Howard's suggestion that we review it. And I'm eternally grateful. The piano-less saxophone trio is something of a dying art-form where jazz records are concerned. But with the J. D. Allen trio is it alive and kicking.
