A touching, rousing, genuinely excellent CD,

I bought the original UK version of this CD some months back and, when I found the US version had a different tracklisting, I had to have that too. Eileen Rose is without doubt the finest new songwriter I've heard in years. Her lyrics can be poetic and earthy, funny and terribly sad, while her music (like all the best music) defies pigeonholing. There's definitely blues in there, and country, and swamp rock, and pop but, no matter which genres are colliding, it's all performed with such amazing panache you just go along for the ride. The brilliant melodies just keep on coming. Then there's the voice - part Steve Tyler, part Edith Piaf, incredibly strong, a rare character. If you like either of the above, or Stevie Nicks, or Kate Bush, or Tom Waits . . . actually, if you really like music you'll love this one. Take my word for it.

I bought this on the grounds of some very strong reviews in the quality British press and what I can't believe is - being as every single track on the CD is superb - how come I've never heard of Eileen Rose before? NO ONE starts out this good. Where's she been hiding? What a fabulous mix of styles - blues, country, funky rock, even songs that sound like hymns - and what an incredible voice! Sorry to rave, but this one's definitely worth it. You HAVE to check it out.

Boston rocks again!,

After seeing the Patriots at the Superbowl I didn't think I could feel any better about my hometown. Then I discovered Eileen Rose. I think she's the best songwriter to come out of Boston since Aimee Mann, and Shine Like Is Does is absolutely superb. Can't wait for the upcoming Long Shot Novena - it's sure to be one of the albums of 2002.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for recommending Eileen Rose so highly. I risked spending the money and I was not disappointed one iota! What a beautiful voice, what wonderfully moving songs. I think anyone who likes alt-country like Ryan Adams, or indie-greats like The Walkabouts, or even country rock balladeers like Lucinda Williams would absolutely love this disc. I just can't wait for the next one.

Another Boston smash!,

Hi there,I'm always keen to keep abreast of the Boston music scene. I think it's been one of the most vibrant and progressive in the world - ever since the Pixies and Throwing Muses. How come I never heard of Eileen Rose then, when she's such an amazing songwriter and such a brilliant singer, and she's Bostonian? Well, seems she's lived in England for the last 10 years. That explains it. But, being as she sounds like a fabulous combination of PJ Harvey, Tom Waits, Kate Bush (and even Aerosmith!), I'd like to say this to the English . . . can we have her back now?

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed this album. Never heard of Ms Rose before, but I'm 100% certain I'll hear plenty more about her in the future. Mark my words, this one's gonna be a superstar!

Just wanted to say thanks to all the people who reviewed Shine Like It Does so positively. Being a natural born risk-taker, I took you at your word and I think I've found my new favourite artist. Fantastic songs, fantastic voice. It rocks and it moves you. And she's beautiful too! When's the next record due? I want it NOW!

Hey, I'm in a gang!,

I can't believe it - people NEVER like the same artists as me. I also saw Eileen Rose playing with Ron Sexsmith in Chicago and thought she was tremendous. And I bought Shine Like It Does and I loved that too. Now I see that, for the first time, plenty of Amazon customers shared my experience and feelings. Am I going mainstream, or is Eileen Rose just undeniably brilliant?

Is this a nationwide thing going on?,

Great to see the response to Eileen Rose's Chicago show, and the CD. I was at the San Francisco show - the last one of the tour, I think - and I was completely blown away by her performance. She was sassy, funny and had a superb voice, AND she had the songs to back it up. Just like everyone else seems to have done, I bought the CD, and just like everyone else seems to have been, I was mightily impressed. The crowd in SF seemed to agree with me - she got a standing ovation. How often do you see THAT for a support act? I can't wait for her to come back to SF. Actually, anywhere in the US will do - I will travel!

I also saw Ms. Rose with Ron Sexsmith at Martyrs in Chicago. That great show inspired me to buy Shine Like It Does, which I was surprised to discover was every bit as good, and in some ways better, than the live performance. Every song is a treasure, though it may take a few careful listenings to discover that treasure. My only disappointment was that several of the new tunes she did in the live show aren't on the current CD. But that gives us a lot to look forward to. I'm hoping and praying the "music industry" will continue to allow this artist's music to find its audience.
