Book Description

4 and upP and up
During the hard times of 1932, a poor shoe shine man gives a child his cap, gloves, and an angel made from a spool, then receives a wonderful gift in return.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In the first of several Depression-era tales, a penniless shoeshine man fashions an angel doll, a "spoolie," out of spools, yarn and cloth. When an urchin shows up, the "Shine Man" first gives the boy his threadbare cap, then his sock-gloves and, finally, the spoolie. In Quattlebaum's (Underground Train) lyrical, mystical tale, the man's generosity is unexpectedly rewarded when the boy reveals his identity ("the Heavenly Child") and spirits the man away. Ladwig (What Does the Sky Say?) effectively evokes the setting through the use of perspective and reflected light in his watercolor and acrylic illustrations. Ages 5-up.

From School Library Journal

Gr 1-4-The Great Depression provides a suitably bleak background for this tale of generosity and redemption. On three successive days, Larry, a vagabond shoeshine man, gives his cap, his sock-gloves, and a spool-and-yarn angel (a "spoolie") to a poor boy. With nothing left to give, freezing and hungry, he shines the boy's shoes-and discovers he is "the One.-The Heavenly Child." Suddenly, Larry and the glowing youngster are flying over the town, hand-in-hand, "And all they did for the rest of the night-was shine." With a light touch, Quattlebaum leaves the deeper meaning of the story to readers' imagination: some may realize that Larry flies to heaven to become a star because he died; others may take the adventure at face value. The watercolor with acrylic illustrations feature dramatic perspectives, and many details (ornate gas lamps) to reinforce the period setting. Despite the handsome packaging, this metaphor-laden story may be a hard sell to children.-S. P.

More About the Author

Mary Quattlebaum is an award-winning children's book author. Her new picture book Pirate vs. Pirate is a "rip-roaring pirate yarn" (Booklist) about two buccaneers--a guy and a girl--who both want to be the biggest, baddest pirate in the world. School Library Journal gave it a "four-arrrrr! rating."

Pirate vs. Pirate was inspired by Mary's husband, who asked for a pirate book so he could dress up like a pirate at book events. Mary actually is amazed at the number of kids (and adults) who, like her husband, want to dress up like pirates and shout "arrrr" along with the characters in the book.

Some of Mary's other titles include Winter Friends (starred review, Publishers Weekly), a book of poems based on her snowy city neighborhood, and Sparks Fly High (starred review, Kirkus), her retelling of a Colonial American folktale. Mary's humorous Jackson Jones chapter-book series features a city boy and his adventures in a community garden. The first book, Jackson Jones and the Puddle of Thorns, was called "fast-paced and funny" (Booklist). The latest title, Jackson Jones and the Curse of the Outlaw Rose, is a "unique mystery" (School Library Journal) about a haunted, historical rosebush.

Mary is eagerly awaiting two soon-to-be-published picture books. The Hungry Ghost of Rue Orleans is about a playful ghost who haunts a New Orleans restaurant. Jo MacDonald Saw a Pond was inspired by the pond and wild critters of Mary's country childhood.

When she is not writing, Mary likes to garden, read, walk the family dogs, play the harmonica (badly), juggle (very badly), and eat popcorn (noisily).

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Christmas Classic!, October 10, 2001

This review is from: The Shine Man: A Christmas Story (Hardcover)
The Shine Man makes the perfect Christmas present for children of all ages! In a manner consistent with her previous works, Mary Quattlebaum's use of language and imagery brings her story to life. She captures the mood of a time before I was born, and makes me believe I was there, experiencing it first-hand. The story is simple, but impactful. I can still feel the warm glow of the Christmas spirit while I search for the "Shine Man" within myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shine Man Adds Light to the Holidays, December 1, 2001

This review is from: The Shine Man: A Christmas Story (Hardcover)
This story of finding the divine in people during the Great Depression is a gentle way of helping children (and their adult loved ones)focus on what's most important about the holiday season. Illustrations are reminiscent of Dickens, but set in the 1930's in this country. I'll think of this story (especially the last two pages)when I behold the stars in a bright December sky.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new Christmas Classic, December 14, 2001

This review is from: The Shine Man: A Christmas Story (Hardcover)
"The Shine Man" is a wonderful book that will surely
become a classic Christmas story. It reminded me of
my own father's tales of life during the Depression.
It teaches an important lesson in giving as well as
a bit of history and will stimulate family discussion.
Both the artwork and the story are excellent.
