4.0 out of 5 stars It's Time To Shine July 30, 2013
I have long had a gal-crush on Sara Hickman. Ever since seeing her on tour for her first album, "Equal Scary People," I've been a happy fan and have the opportunity to see her play several more times. Every time I think she can't keep getting better, her albums appear and keep surprising me. "Shine" comes to us with a distinct pop sheen and 10 new songs that are thoroughly enjoyable and lots of fun.

I am particularly fond of "Trouble With Boxes," in which Sara tries to understand how multi-dimensioned people always seem to forced by misunderstanding folks try to fit you into one convenient place. As a performer who is also a philanthropist, teacher and has recorded several successful children's albums, it's obviously a somewhat personal song for her. Yet the theme is universal. No-one wants to be labeled, and that's the message. There's also the jaunty "Primitive Stuff" that asks you to hang in there when the times get tough.

The CD's first single, "Selfish Freak," is a funny look at the ex you just want to go away, then there's the flip side, the salacious and wild "My Cocky Friend."

"Don't give me lip
Let me run this.
Just get me stripped, boy
Just get me serviced
...I want to get it on."

Pretty straightforward stuff. A bit more playful is "Tasty Sweet," where the man of Sara's desires is like "sugar covered peaches, chocolate treats." Things aren't always fun and games, as the lovely ballad "You are Not Alone" and the somber "Two Winters At The Bottom" stay on the serious side. But never fear, the title track at the end of the album ends things on a happy, optimistic note. These are the kind of songs that help you understand how Sara could be named "Official State Musician of Texas" in 2010, an honor she shares with the likes of Willie Nelson (who has covered Sara's beautiful "Simply") and Lyle Lovett. "Shine" is yet another reason to give a listen to her many talents.

Austin-based singer-songwriter Sara Hickman holds the title of "State Musician of Texas". (Really, I'm not making that up; see for yourself.) She is also a funny lady (much, in my opinion, like Christine Lavin). I've seen her perform live and puts on a great show in a variety of music styles. I've also enjoyed her previous CDs as well. There some songs on this CD that I keep replaying (the opener "Tasty Sweet", the fun "Trouble With Boxes" and the quiet and low keyed "Rapture" with piano and trumpet forming the melody line) but there are some odd choices here that may scare off first-timers. The most obvious one is "Primitive Stuff" which begins with a long primal scream from Sara - and I mean long. Until that moment the mood is fun and upbeat, and after "Primitive Stuff" come the very low-key "Rapture". It just seems jarring.

While Sara, herself plays normal (well mostly normal) instruments - (there is "pencil tapping credited to her as well), the oddest instruments are played by Jim Jacobsen, who produced this album. Just some of those are: electric mandola, accordion, guitar case thumping, and "found and junk percussion".

The whole album was recorded in California and that may be why it has less of a "Texas Music" sound than her previous albums. Hickman fans will still want this for their collections, and maybe it's just me, but I wish Sara would go back to the Lone Star State for her next album (and, of course come to Philly again so I can see her perform live). This might be a five star album but it gets a star deducted for "Primitive Stuff". That primal scream just makes me quickly hit the "skip" button.

The CD comes in a digipak with the production credits (and a plea for "fellow hoosier" David Letterman to have her on his show) printed inside.
