Book Description

November 5, 2008 Beers
Commemorating the 100-year anniversary of Shiner Beer, this entertaining history tells the complete story of a famous Texas establishment. Shiner Bock has entered into the pantheon of Texan icons, and this book chronicles its development, from the improbable beginning of German and Czech immigrants who founded the brewery to the successes and struggles of a growing business, recalling the many times the brand was as good as dead. For beer connoisseurs, Texas-history buffs, or simply those who appreciate a story of beating the odds, this is a tribute to an independent and well-made beer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Refreshing Read, January 5, 2009

This review is from: Shine On: 100 Years of Shiner Beer (Beers) (Hardcover)
Under most circumstances, I would much rather be sipping on a cold beer than reading about it. But in this case, the read is every bit as refreshig as the subject matter. The story presented here is less about the process of beer-making and more about a group of hard-working people, working in and exporting a piece of their community bottle by bottle, unwilling to compromise even when the money wagon backs up to the loading dock. The writing is colorful and full of rich detail about the history of Shiner, the brewery, as well as the town in Texas that bears the same name. The design is fresh and has the feel of a hand-designed, wood and lead letter-pressed folio, full of old photographs and ephemera probably dug out old file cabinets. You can almost smell the dust and barley when you page through it. This book is definitley worth digesting if you are into Texas history, the craft of beer-making, branding and maintaining a small business, or all of the above.

5.0 out of 5 stars 100 years, and they're just getting started., January 13, 2009
This review is from: Shine On: 100 Years of Shiner Beer (Beers) (Hardcover)
Shine On is a great coffee table book with plenty of pictures and history. As other reviews have stated, the book covers a good chunk of the town and resident's history while telling the story of "The Little Brewery in Shiner." Overall Mike Renfro has put together a great history, which if you've spent any time looking is impossible to find anywhere on the Internet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bock Book, January 13, 2009
This review is from: Shine On: 100 Years of Shiner Beer (Beers) (Hardcover)
This is a great anthropological look into the history of Shiner, TX and its famous brew. While the story here is uniquely Shiner, the great part is that it could be any small town, since great stories and interesting characters are found everywhere. It's the town and townsfolk that make Shine On great. It just so happens that beer is the vehicle. Overall, a great way to celebrate this slice of Americana (Texasana?) and the generations of Shinerites who quench our thirst, throughout Texas and beyond.

Hope to be there for the big centennial!
