5.0 out of 5 stars The catchiest thing since "Girl From Mars.", February 10, 2001
This review is from: Shining Light (Audio CD)
Ash make their return with the catchiest thing they've done since 1977's "Girl From Mars." The fourthcoming album, "Free All Angels" has been hyped as a poppier album than most of their previous work, if this is anything to go by then it should be a fantastic collection of songs.

"Shining Light" manages to be catchy without being disposable and romantic without being cliched. "You are a force, you are a constant source, you are a shining light," Tim beams on the hook crammed verses. Even the drumming is catchy for God's sakes. While 1977 had fantastic singles it lacked enough good songs to be considered truly great. "Nu Clear Sounds," the last album went unnoticed partly because the majority of the singles were tired, half stabs at riff driven punk. The best songs were the quiet, gentle ones that were tucked away at the end of the album. "I'm Gonna Fall" is still one of the best things in the Ash cannon. "Shining Light" really is great and is hinting at a fully developped classic Ash pop album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ash Shines, December 4, 2002

What is there to say about this song? It speaks for itself- fantastic! The lyrics are almost like poetry- smooth and flowing. This wonderful song featured in the very last scene of the sci-fi show Roswell's final episode is special to the fans- and it should be.

Shining Light is the best song ever, and the b-side, warmer than fire comes a close second. unfortunately, the third track comes nowhere near to being as good as the first two. Shining light also gives a good preview of the album Free All Angels: pure genius. Thanks Tim.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice to see them back, but no classic, February 12, 2001
This review is from: Shining Light (Audio CD)
Ash's first release since 1999's Numbskull EP sees them, as promised, moving away from the Stooges influences and industrial scratches which were entering their music and into mellower pastures. Both Shining Light itself and the bonus track Warmer Than Fire are slow contemplative love songs of sorts. Shining Light is easily the better of the two, fortunately as its the one they've pinned their hopes on. A catchy pop song with a bit of feedback-edged guitar, it makes for a nice listen, although Tim Wheeler's vocie isn't the best for this type of thing. Warmer Than Fire maybe a little too bland, and the third track is okay but no stunner. This may be a good prelude to their 3rd album, and is worth the import price for fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Single, February 10, 2001
This review is from: Shining Light (Audio CD)
An interesting effort from Brit-Pop darlings Ash, this single is a melodic, almost jangly slice of noise pop. Somewhat reminiscent of The La's or Cast. Definitely worth a look!
