Shinobi is one of those games that got the ninja theme rolling for video games. This title is one of the pioneers.
Shinobi fans MUST play this game.
This is a 2D sidescroller game where you play Joe Musashi, a trained ninja with many weapons at your disposal. Each mission is made up of a few levels. In each level, you move from left to right (sometimes right to left, depending on the level), while killing enemies, getting upgrades, and rescue hostages (by touching them). At the end of the mission, you get a massive boss fight. If you do succeed, you get to a bonus level, which is a very entertaining yet hard shuriken shooting gallery. Oh yes, did I forget ninja magic which you can use to destroy all enemies on screen/freeze enemies/float in the air.... ??
To sum it up, old school platforming.
The game is very well executed. Music is very catchy. Graphics are really excellent for the 8bit gaming era. It gives a very retro-classic impression when you play it today. Controls are smooth and glitches are few but do not affect gameplay much.
This is not the very first Shinobi game, however; it is a port of the Arcade game. If you ever happen to have played the arcade version, there will be a few differences. You do have a life bar and do not die instantly, it takes a few hits. There are more magic types. Also, gameplay is generally slower and levels are larger. Bosses look and battle slightly differently. It feels almost like Shinobi 1.5, so it is still worth your time if you already played the arcade version.
This game is recommended for: Ninja-fans Retro-gamers People who like 2D platformers Anybody with a Master System!
Just like the other comments made from the early entry, the original Shinobi for the SMS still is entertaining, gameplay is superb and age very well like fine wine.......Truly an original classic for all times......A must have for Sega and Shinobi fans enthusiast.
