This review is from: Ships in Bottles (Paperback)
I bought the book with no prior knowledge of this type of modeling, and it generally fulfilled my expectations.
The book goes over choosing materials, tools, making the sea, hull, rigging and placing the model in the bottle. There are a lot of drawings and photographs, but some advice is hidden in the text. At the end of the book, there are several sample projects of varying complexity.
To be honest, I was initially a little disappointed - presentation seemed rather dated, and thumbing through the pages gave me no clear "a-ha!" moments. I shortly discovered that the author expects certain amount of resourcefulness from the reader - for example telling you to get a dowel, and letting you decide where from. I'm used to books meant for a novice guiding the reader more closely.
But once I got over this first impression, I began appreciating the book more and more. The advice, although as I mentioned sometimes a bit general, is definitely sound. Some issues are shown approached in various ways. There is some amount of historical background on the subjects of the sample projects - definitely interesting to me. There is also explanation of how the sails are positioned depending on the wind direction - great for someone unfamiliar with sailing ships.
Overall I like this book, and am not tempted to buy another one on the subject.
